S4 RX7 VS. Scion tC?
I'm wondering who'd win one of my friends is prob. goin to try to race me, I improving on my shifting but I still need some work. Car for car who has the upper hand?
My Car: 1987 N/A RX-7 5-speed Base Model (No P/S etc.) Full sythetics (royal purple), Mandrel Bent Custom Cat-Back, K&N Drop in. Friend's Car: 2006 Scion tC Automatic Short Ram Intake, "Bullet Style" straight flow muffler. |
Scion Tc, MANUAL: 0-60 in 8.8s
s4 fc: 0-60 in ~8s. Supposedly 7.7s, but I don't know the source on that so I rounded up. Magazines sometimes drop the clutch to give a lower 0-60 time. Extra weight would also increases the 0-60, but you have the base. New cars tend to have very good exhausts and intakes, so his mods should do little or nothing. They may even make things worse. Yours, OTOH, are good for about 10HP. 7-8 from catback, 2-3 from RP. Not sure how much from the intake but it's not much. I don't mean for my total to imply that the intake gives zero, btw, I just wanted to give a conservative total. That might shave 0.2s off your 0-60 (at the very most 0.5s, but probably not nearly so much). A 2006 Civic EX w/ a manual does 0-60 in 8.6s, about the same as the scion. The automatic Civic EX, OTOH, does 0-60 in 10.1s. If the scion automatic is the same you will absolutely cream him. Regardless you should beat him no problem. Even if he were in a manual, 1 second on the 0-60 is quite significant. I got my new car numbers from consumerreports.org. CR also says the curb weight on the manual tC is 2,890lbs. The automatic will probably be at least 50 pounds heavier. |
scion=160hp
you=140hp....20 years ago :D but, you weigh 300lbs less, give or take... the optimist in me wants to say you should be able to take him :) |
Thanks for the advice guys, I think the biggest factor will be the auto vs manual ...
Based on ericgrau's estimate I should be around 154-156 Crank HP which isn't that bad I know I have a bit more loss on RWD than FWD but Manual>Auto :) Searching the Web I bumped into this http://www.getrotord.com/html/rotary_specs.php and this http://modernracer.com/sciontc.html I wonder if those numbers are any good. j0rd4n Thanks! I KNOW I can take him on an autoX or road course the tC's handling numbers aren't very high, 0.81g on the skid pad compared to our 0.86-0.89g stock. BTW my car/engine has 84k miles on it, so still in pretty good condition.:) |
id say you could take it. only good thing about automatics is theyre predictable.
|
:) Thanks NCross. I found another 0-60 time on consumerguide:
"Quick enough on takeoff with either transmission. Manual version feels livelier, but needs downshifting for decent midrange passing power. Test automatic tC did 8.4 sec 0-60 mph, showed adequate muscle at 50-65 mph, but wouldn't make a kickdown shift without flooring the gas pedal." |
ive raced a TC i had a catback and intake. he had nothing.
i got spanked. yes i knew how to drive my NA. i only had 60k original miles on it. got my t2, and re raced him.....i laugh everytime he tries to talk shit on rx7s now, and bring up the fact on the freeway my 4th pulls way way faster than his 3rd. |
scion tc?
ive seen mostly chicks driving that  |

Had a scion. Ran 16.3 pretty consistant it was 5 speed. Them Scions have all that new electrical stuff and when you press on the gas it seems very tourquey but thier really nice cars fun to drive even though they arent "fast". They do good burnouts.

How funny, a friend of mine has a stock tC manual, he challenged me today. I have an 87 GXL, all stock. I accepted, hes a nice guy and said that I'd definitely win. Little does he know that hes going to walk me... easy.

Dude. The scion would win. Haven't you seen the commercials? They're designed after sharks for more aerodynamics!! Haha. I kid bro.

That's a retarded commercial, makes it look like a Tiburon wannabe. I also HAD a TC and got rid of it real quick. |
Hmmm a friend of mine has a tC, and i can beat him pretty bad.
But, I have a good number of mods. So, I don't know how you will do. Mods in sig are old. Current mods: RB header and presilencer Dynomax catback Lightweight flywheel SS clutch / pressure plate S5 intake manifolds electronic 5/6 port electronic VDI (using electric solenoid) SAFC-II (Not really tuned) Cone filter with box Engine has 15k on it since rebuild. |
just race him and post the results :icon_tup
|
FWIW, the head of the socal miata club dynoed his newer(few 1000 on the ticker) TC at RR&R, he made 107 at the wheels with a cat back as the only mod. IIRC it made 98 bone stock.

WHAT?!? The S5 manifold is an upgrade for us? Word! BTW I still think we (S4 people) can make more power based on the gains on the S5 over S4 due to electronics..... |
You are going to get beat on bottom end. Torque is your major factor.
|
Haha its an auto you should rape him...but this whole benchracing shit is gay you will win he's auto and heavier your stick and lighter.
|
Race down a freeway onramp, throw torque out the window :)

I want a header! But the RB won't bolt up to my exhaust without the presilencer, and then it gets too expensive! I was planning on a pacesetter and then cyramic coating but if I do that I might as well go with corksport which gives good gains and bolts right up! WHAT?!? The S5 manifold is an upgrade for us? Word! BTW I still think we (S4 people) can make more power based on the gains on the S5 over S4 due to electronics..... S5 UIM and IIM w/ VDI is an upgrade for higher RPMs. Check out... : http://homepage.mac.com/carldavis/intake.html At higher RPMs the S5 uses pressure waves to "self supercharge". Not huge gains, but noticeable. And it doesn't kick in until 5k+ RPM. But a nice upgrade if you plan on staying N/A. I stuck with the S4 LIM because I heard it flows better then the S5 LIM. Though, I haven't confirmed it. And, it was cheaper that way. :). I used this page for my swap: http://howto.globalvicinity.com/gv_w...=119&co=1&vi=1 Also the Electronic VDI stuff I did too. GL |
Sweet! Looks like alot of work but it might be worth it :)
