Racing tip: Brake Boosting

I've heard a lot about people brake boosting on the roll, so decided to practice it today, but it doesn't really feel much faster. When you're brake boosting, you're prespooled, but as soon as you let go of the brake, it just feels like the car keeps going, without that funny feeling in the gut, acceleration feeling. When you don't brake boost, you can really feel the car pickup and go as the turbos kick in.

So I'm wondering, how much of a difference this technique makes.

it more for people running large single turbos.

I've never heard of brake boosting. What are the steps.

Isnt it mostly for autos? Otherwise you could just downshift.

what i remember is that riding the brake builds up boost

I've practiced it, and I can't imaging why it wouldn't work.... basically, you use a bit of brakes to build up some resistance to that the car will build a little boost up while you're at steady-state in advance of a rolling race. The car seems to get that "jump" straight on the gas when you let off the brakes.

My friend w/ a supra actually had a device in his car that made the car build boost while cruising, and it really worked...

I have used it alot when I race the guys whith the lowend torque....Works gret. especially if someone wants to pull with you when you are below your powerband.

Pretty much, to prevent lag.

Some people think it really works and it does but not necessarily.

apneablue 12-18-05 08:40 PM

It does but not necessarily? what does that mean?

I tried brake boosting with my car today... didn't work. ;) :p: :icon_tup:

I wanna know also.

I don't bother brake boosting anymore below 60mph. With my tires and the cold weather we've been having all I do is spin. I'll try again when I get some better rubber in the back.

And to the people who say it doesn't work i think you guys are just doing something wrong(minus the LS1guy;) ). I'm still on the seq twins and it is a night at day difference even for me. I can easily build over 10psi before the race even starts.

Dave, We really need to get a video of us going at it with and without BB. That would make for some good footage.

I only do it once in a while cause i am not too fond of it. It does however work! I usually get pulled on rolling starts but once i brake boost it allows me to stay side by side. I think the guys that doubt it do not know how to do it right...you gotta make sure youre on boost! If you loose by a car or 2, brakeboost and you'll be able to win. I've done it more than once.

I usually give it as much gas/brake as possible without creeping forward. You gotta modulate both pedals and keep an eye on the boost gauge. Its not that hard, just gotta get a feel for left foot braking. Sometimes it pisses me off cause they take too long and here you are ridding the brakes...

darkphantom 12-21-05 05:02 PM

how do you brake boost with a stick?

ProjectD 12-22-05 04:05 AM

1. go to the best gear for whatever mph you are gonna race from

2. while still on the gas gently press the brake pedal, you'll want to press it hard enough
that it starts slowing you down. But to keep from slowing down you apply more throttle.

3. The harder you ride your brakes the more load you put on your enigine. the more load you put on your engine the more boost you will build. (keep an eye on your gauge)

4. And as soon as you are ready to start go WOT and at the same time release the brakes, and that lovely sensation of boost is already there waiting for you rather than you waiting for it.

The key is to find just the right anount of preassure to apply on each pedal but that becomes very easy with a little pratice.

Brake boosting just gives you the feeling that you take off faster ive tried multiple pulls and the fastest way was just using the right gear at my turbos "sweet spot" right around 4k

apneablue 12-22-05 11:17 AM

I have pulled with a mustang that was about equal to my fd in power weight ratio...I could pull on him but every so slightly...The only way I was able to do this was brake boosting. If I just waited around for the boost to build he was already a car ahead of me and then I played catchup until we have to let off....

When you line up on the street there's no guarantee that you will be in your "sweet spot" at that time.

If anyone here really don't think it works, then the reason you don' think it works is just because y'all don't know what the hell you're doing.
