Just raced my friends GS-T

I just got done racing my friend, he has a 1998 Eclipse GS-T and he has an HKS blow off valve and a K&N filter, he has a couple of BOV mods too so he spikes to like 20psi for like 2 seconds then it drops to like 13psi. He beat me everytime from a 40mph role. Should a stock RX7 be able to beat an eclipse with those mods? I think there might be something wrong with my car, it has a bad high rpm miss, i hear that i need to get a better ignition thing to help that. What do you think, is there something wrong with my car? Should i be able to be him?

Turbo23 03-17-05 09:33 PM

fd or fc?

rotorsownyou7 03-17-05 09:50 PM

If it is a 3rd gen that sucks.

Outkast 03-17-05 09:55 PM

Stock GS-T : 15.0
Stock FD :13s

Those turbo eclipses can easily boost 20 psi and make 300 hp. He may have more serious mods than he wants to let you know. Also, a high RPM "miss" sounds pretty bad, your car is definitely screwed up. If you have a 3rd gen or even a modded 2nd gen you should beat him easily. Only a stock TurboII could lose to a mildly modded 98 GS-T.

Believe i have known this kid since like 1st grade, i know what his car has. My car is a FD. I should be able to beat him but i cant. My turbos are making a whisteling noise at around 4k rpms. i just need a rebuild. I want to get the RB duals and greddy Airinx intake and a downpipe, that should take care of him. What should i do to my car in the mean time, what could be slowing it up. The guys that had it before me took really good care of it and so have i. 78000 miles on stock everything, except the aluminum AST and NGK plugs and wires.

rynberg 03-17-05 10:16 PM

Why is this in the kill section? I answered your post in the 3rd gen section. If you hear whistling, you have a boost leak. It doesn't really sound like the car has been kept up immaculately if you have a boost leak and a high rpm miss...

Get a boost guage first.

Outkast 03-17-05 10:47 PM

Man fix your car please. There is plenty of support here. You are embarrasing me. Good luck with all that.

MazdaSpeed93 03-18-05 12:06 AM

I'll just copy and paste this since he has made two posts..

As for the spiking, a stock 4g63 has a BCS restictor which restricts boost. I have modified mine to have more flow. I have nothing ported and stock exhaust so air just flows past my wastegate creating the spike. So, I'm running very lean for a couple of seconds while it spikes at WOT(haven't had time to put on my MBC).

Anyway, his car seems fine. There's a little hesitation around mid RPM's but I'm thinking that's just the second turbo kicking in(don't know how smooth the transition is supposed to be, but psi does drop to 8 at that time correct?)

I usually pull a little at the start because of my little T-25 turbo, then after that it's pretty much even, so it's no dramatic loss like some of you may be thinking.

P.S. If you haven't figured this out by now, I'm the one with the GST.

Outkast 03-18-05 06:22 AM

Still, he should whip your ass.............

apex_sideway 03-18-05 10:09 AM

Dunno man, Turbo Eclipses can be fast . . . . a friend of mine keeps up with my Auto FD (he has a fmic, external wastegate, and some other stuff)

dbragg 03-18-05 10:58 AM

theres a GST in my town that just has a BOV, and a boost gauge and a few other small things. he has a stock turbo and doesnt even have a header and he hit 13.7

He wouldn't have a header being turbocharged and all... ;) And those "few other small things" would have to be full regular bolt-on mods for his GS-T to hit high 13's. There's room for an outstanding driver to go veeeeeeery high 14's maybe with a stock FWD DSM, but you need to put a few mods on to hit 13s.

All I need is our free mods and a boost controller to hit 13's man. GST's and GSX's come with so many restrictions from the factory it's not funny.

Maybe you guys race the non-turbo'd version lol, or the non-turbo'd with turbo kits that only run 7psi or below.

But anyway, there's so many Eclipse/Talon's out there in the hands of careless retards because they're relatively cheap. People buy them and think can throw some stuff on and it will run perfect, but they're just idiots that don't know anything about tuning.

-Eclipse GST

turbogarrett 03-18-05 12:47 PM

I ran a 14.1 @ 98 mph in a bone stock 99 gst. Still a properly running stock fd should be a little faster.

Are you on DSMTuners.com? Care to point out some profiles of people who have run 13's with just the free mods and a controller? Those mods will get you low-mid 14's as far as I know. Hell, I've got a dang near complete EVOIII 16G setup on my '97 TSi AWD but until I get the injectors, AFC, and clutch in there, my Talon is only capable of 13's. Check out my profile over there for a mod list.

Unless you count Exhaust and Intake as "free mods", you won't be seeing 13's on those alone.

Impossible.

You run an EvoIII 16g without controlling the fuel? That's just a waste of turbo. That turbo is probably slowing you down without equivalent fuel to run it. I will bet you once you get around 650-720cc injectors, something like the S-AFC, clutch and pocketlogger and TUNE it RIGHT you will be WELL into the 12's.

Don't worry about me, my stuff is on the way. My FIC 650's and S-AFC II just came in the mail yesterday, I'm waiting on my DSMlogger, and will be ordering my clutch shortly. I'm shooting for low-mid 12's with the complete setup. But aside from that, have you read the fuel chart that one of the vendors put out on there site (can't remember which)? The one that lists what fuel mods you need for turbo upgrades? They list a fuel pump as being all you need to run up to 18 psi on an upgraded turbo w/93 or 94 octane. I think that's a little optimistic myself, so I run 15-16 psi with my Walboro 190 and it pulls much better than the T-2small ever did. My fuel supply is just fine at the boost level I am running at, but thanks for your concern.

That's probably RRE and by upgraded turbo they probably mean 16g. EvoIII requires more than that to get some good numbers, as you can see by you're only running 15-16 psi. You are going to feel SO much of a difference with the fuel setup and tuning it 20+psi, mmmmm sounds like fun :9. I'm going to be getting a similar set up to yours pretty soon too.

Good luck.

Ok, I have owned both cars. I just sold my '95 GST, it had catback, removed wastegate restrictor, intake, manual boost controller. I now have a '95 FD and there is no way in hell that my GST could touch the fd. I love the dsm but not against my fd from stand still or role.

Your FD is stock? There's no way. When I ride in his FD it FEELS faster just because it's so small and you're so snug in the seats. My Eclipse feels like a boat compared to it lol. But when running them together, mine edges out a little.

My fd has intake and THATS IT. the exhaust, boost, etc... all stock. here is a pic. I raced a mazda speed protoge once, that thing could probably take a slightly modded GST. Don't get me wrong, the gst is a great tuner car, tons of potential but out of the box with small mods, not fd fast.
