Got beat then redeemed myself

Went out cruising today, it was soo nice out i just had to do it.

Took a different highway this time and im just cruising in the middle lane, then i heard a v8 rumble come along side of me (he was on the left). I glance over and it looked to be the newest benz suv. Im guessing ml63 amg?? It was an suv and it had a v8 so it has to be that one.

Anyway i normally dont like doing highway pulls with random people, just amongst friends and my car is still cold so i tried to just ignore him. I gave him the thumbs up then proceeded to go the speed limit.

He didnt want to leave lol and he kept pacing me so i was like ah what the hell, my exit was coming up anyway so maybe a short pull and then stop.

Well i was in 5th, dropped it to 4th at around 60-65, (YES I KNOW, wrong gear) i dropped back a bit to his rear passenger fender/bumper then punched it. When i got up to his door, i heard his engine come alive. The truck is LOUD. He was in the right gear as i heard his shift, probably from 3rd to 4th.

I didnt gain any ground yet i wasnt really falling back much either. I'd say he beat me by a full car length. I was doing rather well for being in the wrong gear on a cold engine lol. I believed we stopped, or well i stopped at 90mph, then switched lanes to slow down cause my exit was coming up.

I wish i would have caught him when my engine was properly warmed up (temp gauge was 140F BTW) and i started in the right gear. Im sure i would have done alot better, probably even walking him a bit. But no excuses. I lost fair and square. Next time i shouldnt race a person when im not ready lol.

Then on the way home (this time engine warmed up lol). I saw a civic in my rearview dipping through traffic to get to me i presume since most cars do that. Small stretch of road is available and civic is about to do a fly by to the left of me. I dropped to 3rd and hammered it. His car is now fading away. 4th gear and i shut down at 110mph. He's still back there but still speeding up and still does a fly by next to me. It was a civic si mugen. Good looking car.

Cliffs: Got beat by a fast truck on a cold engine, beat a slower car on a warm engine lol

I fail to see how that counts as redeeming yourself, but whatever helps you sleep at night

infinite7z 02-06-11 08:52 PM

Gurew 02-06-11 08:59 PM

All bolts ons minus PFC.

Non seq i might add which probably contributed to the loss since the car lagged.

Again i still think i did well despite all the factors that played apart in why i lost lol

evot23 02-07-11 07:29 AM

non seq..I'm sure your car lagged with you dropping it to 4th.

I'm with SpeedOfLife on the redemption part lol...ts like getting beat up by your big brother cause you were tired so you beat up on your little brother when you were ready.

It was good to see you stay honest though and post up. Good job.

Hey I need some satisfaction because of what happened lol.

I normally don't entertain other cars but those were the 2 encounters I had that day so that's why I mentioned it.

Otherwise this thread will just be about me losing lol.

evot23 02-07-11 10:50 AM

I hear ya, just giving you a hard time. I think reading threads where you lose are ok and actually refreshing so long as its a good run. Gives you motivation to be faster IMO.

yzf-r1 02-07-11 11:16 AM

Trucks are easy to kill once you get about 100 because the aerodynamic drag kills them.

Sounds like you were a little scared to drop it in third and truly put the foot down, which is not surprising ;) LOL at the Civic SI "kill"

Crank up the boost, son....then we'll see how your oil looks!

Non-sequential done right (full ported manifold, light flywheel, full exhaust etc) is very responsive. While 4th may not be optimal at this speed for a close race, any of these trucks (including saleen sport trucks) have not been any trouble for me in 60 to 110 roll-ons, I leave them for dead every time. I had some clown actually come after me with me with his big spotlight about a month ago, ha - he was pissed after I blew by him in second on a (two lane) on-ramp. Funny how these assholes think they're the king of the road.

I can't get mad at the truth so ill take your constructive criticism with a grain of salt.

I think im just a noob at racing. I wouldnt say im scared. I've been in and driven way faster cars than mine. It was just a spir of the moment thing. I wasn't thinking and downshifted in the wrong gear. I think even if I did downshift into 3rd wouldn't make much of a difference cause like I said my engine was still cold..temp gauge read 140f. Approx 10 min after leaving my house and it was like 38 degrees outside.

I don't think the civic si was a kill, I just mentioned it. And I felt better beating that after losing to an expensive amg truck.

yzf-r1 02-07-11 12:29 PM

You're smart not to floor it until the coolant is fully up to temp, and the oil takes even longer - most people don't realize that. "Cold start up wear" is more a function of how you drive the car when the oil is cold, I'm always amazed at people who start their car on a 20 degree day and mash the throttle out of the parking lot, that's just idiotic.

Dropping too low of a gear is not good because you'll immediately need to shift again, 60 to 65 is probably on the fence. I think redline in third should be somewhere around 80-85 mph, just guessing.

Go run a Cayman S, those guys are a hoot.

Yeah cars like this usually don't pay me any mind. Its usually like evos and other jap cars. When I see expensive cars they ignore me or just smile but never wanna play. So I thought it was kinda cool a car prob more than twice the cost of my car brand new wanted to play. It was just wrong timing on my end.

Yeah after I lost I was laughing and thinking damn I need a faster car. Lol.

People say 300rwhp in an fd is fast. I kinda think otherwise.

Lots and lots of factory cars out now are really fast.

The new v6 stand runs 13s stock. The gt version runs 12s stock. That's amazing. And those are affordable cars.

Granted I don't even have 300rwhp, maybe 280, 290rwhp at best, car is def slacking on the power side. Good to be competitive on a track or autox but for street driving, I think 400rwhp is perfect Imo.

My friends supra made 618rwhp and it seemed untouchable. One of the fastest cars I been in. A reason why I love that car. Its like the car doesn't stop pulling. Endless power those engines have.

Now I want a v8. can't see myself doing the swap in my car though. I wouldn't mind buying another fd already swapped. Or maybe ill just get a gto and use that as my daily driver.

evot23 02-07-11 12:51 PM

supra single turbo or 3 rotor FD single turbo to me are awesome. Have the LS6 cause I got lucky on price and timing.

1QWIK7 02-07-11 04:55 PM

Little by little im starting to grow on the v8.

I never owned a v8 car before but i have driven and rode in many. I dont know what its like to own say a 500rwhp cobra or a 500rwhp vette. Im sure it would be insane, getting speeding tickets left and right lol.

I need a fast car though. I got the bug i think. lol

After all these years, now im power hungry.

yzf-r1 02-07-11 05:37 PM

360-380 rwhp is readily achievable at about 15 psi on pump gas, heck alot of people are running 17 psi and 400+, which will light up the rear tires through third. Anything more is essentially useless on the street and will just get you a bunch of tickets. Furthermore, 400 rwhp in an FD is enough to take down just about anything short of a ZO6. V8s just don't work for me in an RX-7, get a Mallet Sky - or a C6 (?) - if you feel the need to go that route. The C6 is a great car for cruising and there is no shame in driving one, although you will feel older haha. The V8 guys know their own tune - what fun is beating a Mustang or an F-body with another V-8 car? Not much. The rotary is what makes this car unique and what makes it so fun to drive imo. People who give up on the rotary are lazy, there is plenty of good builders and tuners out there to keep them running reliably for a very long time.

Actually, its quite fun...even more fun beating other imports..cause that gets too easy. Granted there are quite a few that will kill plenty of us out there.

Its not about giving up, its just about trying something new...at least for me any way.

To each his own.

estevan62274 02-07-11 06:41 PM

Someone will always be faster!

It all about your preference and what you want from your car.

3rd in my TII I redline at about 90, and it can damn near hit 100 before fuel cut. I think the FD gearing is real similar.

1QWIK7 02-08-11 07:28 AM

Yeah I wouldn't say changing the rotary is giving up. Id say its trying something new.

But like I said I couldn't do it to my car. I rather have another fd that's already swapped but I don't think owning 2 fd's is right for me. I rather have a different car. Like the other guy said, a z06 but I would rather get a gto since it has a backseat and something I could park on the street without worrying.

evot23 02-08-11 07:53 AM

just about every sports car has 2nd gear going beyond or at 60...one shift to get that 0-60 time as low as possible. 3rd gear carries pretty far

1QWIK7 02-08-11 10:54 AM

I think the c6z first gear can hit 58 mph. Simply incredible.

yzf-r1 02-08-11 11:45 AM

My ZX-10 can do go over 80 in first gear :)

Oh, and it leaves any street car for dead....

There are tons of reasons to go v8. Being lazy is one of them but its not the only one. I think one of the most overlooked ones is the cost of getting parts and finding someone who can work on them. Finding a good rotary shop is hard. If I ever move I'd be in big trouble.
