FD vs Modded 300ZX Twin Turbo

I had a nice little run in with a modded 300 ZX Twin Turbo last night.

I first saw him in town from behind. I could see that he had two aftermarket pipes coming out the back. They looked very shiny. Definitely much bigger than stock. When I was able to get next to him, it was apparent that he wanted to have a little fun. It took a few minutes, but we finally got out onto a more open road, with only one car in front of us. The road would be changing to 4 lanes shortly. As soon as it did, he passed the other car, and pulled into the right lane. I pulled up next to him, and we both hit it. I got a quick jump (he may have had more turbo lag) starting at about 70 mph. Nearing 100, I shifted into 4th. I had about 1 1/2 cars lengths. In 4th, I pulled about another 1/2 car length before hitting around 120, and letting up. I'm running 13 psi.

We both pulled over to say hello. There were two people in the Z. The driver told me that he had a re-chipped ECU, with exhaust, and intake mods. He said he was running a little higher boost than stock. I told him that his mods sounded like mine. The Z was a white 91. Looked to be in very good shape. We chatted for a few minutes, while admiring the other guys car. That Z sure looked nice, and was pretty fast. I thanked him for the race, and went home.

That was my FD's Christmas present to me :D

Good race ;)
How do you like the 9.5lb flywheel? Does it help?
Does it hurt you from a standing start?
Worth the $$?

Nice kill. I'm surprised you got the jump on him cause Z's are notorious for their torque. I should know, I have one, lol.

well i know the NA have some massive amounts of trouque, but in TT stock they are weak, my bud has one and my perents bar bone stock 95 Buick LaSabre, took it off the line, up too bout 15 he was passing, me, his car is gutless untill 80ish when the turbo's wake up, then after that it's not bad, but i'de never own one, too many of them around and just a pain in the ass to work on, took us (three of us) over 2 1/2 - 3 hours to change the bloody plugs, then again the owner wanted to follow this "guide" he got off the net, and take freaking all day, i was like who cares it will be fine, i could have done it probly 1 1/2 hours too 2, not the 2 1/2 - 3 it too us all. but thats me

I like the light flywheel. I can feel an acceleration improvement compared to the heavy stock flywheel. Worth the money IMO. I don't do much racing from a stop, so I can't answer that part. I don't see how it could hurt, unless you were not familiar with it.

Well, the inertial force of a heavier flywheel is beneficial in launches, so some weight is necessary. Thats why there's always some sort of disclaimer about what certain flywheels should be used for.

Huh... Maybe something's wrong with your buddies TT? Although I've never ridden in a stock 3ZXTT, I doubt that most people would consider them gutless until 80mph.

The turbo 3ZXTT's have much more torque than the N/A version.

eriksseven 12-27-05 12:36 AM

The N/A version had a 24-valve 3.0-liter V6 that produced 222 hp at 6,400 RPM's and 198 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 RPM's.

The TT has the same 24-valve 3.0-liter V6, but the power jumps to 300 hp at 6,400 RPM's and 283 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 RPM's.

Yea, the last year for a straight six (L-series) in a Z(x) was the 1983 model.

AgentSpeed 01-01-06 06:01 PM

My buddy has a 300zx TT. He has some traction issues to work out with his. He refuses to race me know but we use to be pretty close. I'd usually win but we were close for a while. That was BEFORE my motor popped. I was only running 10psi then. Now we've both had a motor pop a piece. I spent a little more than he did so that's why he's scared. He rode with me shortly after my tune and he will not even pull up next to me at a light now...lol

Nice kill.
