FD and Supra @ illegal drags (long)
 

My friend and I decided to head out to the illegal drags last night. There are no drag strips close here so the racers make do by going 20mi. out on the farm roads and have marked off a 1/4mi.
This was my first time actually racing with these guys and there was a wide range of cars to choose from. Since my friend showed up in his singled 94 Supra everyone wanted a piece of him. Nobody really gave my FD much credit as a drag racer.
To get my feet wet I started off with a race I knew I could win. It was a late-model (02-03) Camaro SS with a chip and exhaust. He knew I would win too but we just wanted to get out there and test the pavement. It was definitely harder to get a good launch than a real drag strip even though there was a good build up of rubber already on the start – there has been racing at this spot for over 25 years. I spin through first and hit second, which mostly spins and requires an early shift into third. The Camaro had traction problems too but I never saw him until I hit third and he was a couple car-lengths back in my rear-view mirror. As soon as third hooked up I was gone. I shift up to fourth to finish but immediately let off. He was further back than I could measure in car-lengths.
Then my friend decides we should race. We have been back and forth for a couple years with him always having the advantage. But just in the past few weeks after I got my custom v-mount in and running well we have been closer than ever. Right after I got it in but not tuned, he got me on the street by a couple car-lengths. Then we took the long trip down to Salt Lake City and ran the drag strip there. We went head-to-head and the crowd went wild as I edged him out by 3 tenths. Yet it didn’t seem to count because he got a bad tank of race fuel that night and I luckily opted to just run premium.
So this was it, both of our cars were running good and there would be no excuses.
We line up and everyone is anticipating him to blow my doors off. He does an impressive burnout and I decide to save my tires. The flagger waves and I get over anxious and drop the clutch instead of feathering it. I loose all traction and spin and spin and spin. I know his car all too well and when I hear the turbo spool and his wastegate dump straight to the atmosphere I know it is all over. But I never see him pass and soon he is way too far back in my rear-view. We end it and turn back. He explains that he had forgotten to unlock his torque converter. We decide to go again.
Now my car is heat soaked and we line up again. No one knows what happened and some are even asking if I won – which was pretty obvious if you were watching.
So he does another impressive burnout through three gears – wastegate thundering and tires squealing as his 285s beg for traction. He means business this time. And again I choose not to do a burnout hoping my car will cool down as I wait, mesmerized along with everyone else at the Supra’s concert. The flagger lines us up and we’re off. I get a better launch but still spin, feathering the clutch but also toasting it in the process. I hit second a little early after bouncing off the rev-limiter a few times, but it helps me to finally catch some traction. Just then I hear his wastegate and I’m just waiting for him to start pulling; I can feel him right beside me. But second pulls hard and he doesn’t gain. Then comes the infamous FD third gear and I hit it perfectly, even with my failing syncro. And to my surprise I see headlights appear in my rear-view and I’m pulling hard. I hit fourth with a smooth up shift and it is all over. As I slow down I realize I’m not even touching the seat – I’m literally standing on the gas pedal and holding myself up by the steering wheel.
When we get back to the starting line I don’t think they could believe that I had won – between all the noise and spectacle the Supra made how could he lose. My friend was amazed at how hard I pulled at the top of second and third. He said I won by almost 2 car-lengths. There were no excuses this time from either of us. We had both run a clean race and I got the advantage… this time.
My last race was against an LS1 Camaro with a full exhaust, intake, and cams and something else but I don’t remember. We took off, and after my worst start of the night, I uneventfully won by a couple bus-lengths.
My mods are in my sig along with my new custom v-mount and Blitz BOV. I was boosting at .95 (13.5psi) on my AVC-R.
The Supra runs a T61 at about 1.5+bar and all the bolt-ons. And he is running a built automatic tranny.

What times did you run at the drag strip?

My best was a 12.9@110
My run against the Supra was a 13.0@110

So a single turbo supra with a built auto tranny with race gas run 13's? :rlaugh:

Why do you find that shocking? Like the saying goes; What does a 400hp, 600hp and 800hp supra have in common? 12sec quarter mile times LOL!!

In Vegas he was running mid 12s consistently
I think he is still faster than me but I got the advantage that night

I take it that your sig has not been updated since it does not list your custom V-mount. So what are your current mods?

Wonder what was wrong with the Supra? 21 PSI on race gas? That like a 11 sec car. And the Camaros you are talking should also be 11-12 second cars. Guess drivers is the big mod. Also, looks like your car should be much faster also.

It is called TRACTION, or lack of, it was a street race. But still with the money the supra has in it a 12 sec 1/4 would be SERIOUSLY disappointing. :Wconfused

You have to remember that we are above 4500ft. so drag times will be lower

My mods are in my sig and the only thing different are the v-mount and BOV
I dyno'ed a year ago with the mods in my sig only (no v-mount or BOV) at 303whp and 280lbs/ft on 91 gas with AVC-R set at .75 but creeping and turbos smoking.
The Supra has dyno'ed at 491whp with current mods.

None of us were on race fuel that night - Supra was when we were in SLC but it was bad.
He said he was not having any problems except traction, which we all were that night.
