FB Killed a z/28 and an Impala
 

The Z/28:
Coming home this 2nd gen Camaro comes on the freeway right before my exit. So I sped up to him, we both looked over, he pulled a little ahead, so I just hit 3rd and floored it! By the end of 4th there was so much of a gap it wasnt even funny.. it was hilarius!! :rlaugh:

I went into the downtown (Seneca?) exit at about 80mph.

(Not that I was making sure the Camaro was staying wayyy behind me or anything)

Heading straight for a wall at 80 is a horrible time to figure out how badly your brakes really suck!!!

So I put the brakes on and thought 'SHIT Im not slowing down fast enough' So with a little extra pressure the wheels locked all I could think was 'Fuck Im gonna wreck' By this point I think I made it down to 60. And I was about 5 feet away from the wall. So I turned the wheel, freed up the brakes, just enough to change my angle in relation to the curve, slammed the brakes again, and did this one more time, then slammed the gas coming out.

I ended up sliding out of it damn near sideways, but without touching anything!! Luckily no cops were hanging out there.

THE IMPALA: (to a much lesser extent)
My friend at work clowns on 'Mazdas' all day long. And hes saying how his stock '79 Impala has 300hp, with a 5.0. Somehow I dont think thats true. Sometimes we briefly race after work. When hes coming up fast on me, and I never let him pass, then Ill take off. The next day all he says is 'Ohh I didnt have it to the floor.' All I say is 'its ok for a stock 79 impala, theyre not supposed to be fast. 'you dont have to lie to kick it :fawk:

Holley, SDJ Header, straight pipe, muffler. And thats it really Except Ive spet so much time working on it, I know there has to be more. I thik thats all as far as performance mods. OH! ACT racing clutch, Racing springs, Cowl scoop.

Cool. Do you know how to tune holleys? Because I got mine from rb and I cant get a idle happening. Please let me know If you got any tips on this subject,

yes actually, Im rather good at it now. Especially because I removed the choke, and it still idles even in freezing weather :)

I also have stock ports.

Now where the throttle rests (Where the gas cable connects to the carb) there is a kinda large phillips head screw there. This is your fast idle adjustment.

And you have 2 idle mixture adjustment screws per float bowl, for a total of 4. now what I like to do is (also a good rule of thumb) is to tighten down all 4 of the idle mixture screws (tiny flat head screws) and then back of 2 full turns on each. MAKE SURE they are all adjusted equally.

It totally depends on how your engine is set up, but try starting it. if it runs fine and idles smoothly between 800 and 1000 RPM then your done. However this is not likely

So then if its not idling at all but starts when you put your foot on the gas a bit, turn the fast idle adjust just enough to keep it running.

If your eyes are watering your idle mixture is too rich. If the engine bogs when you rev it, its too lean.

Tightening the idle adjustment makes the mixture leaner.

Im assuming it will be idling choppy at this point. What you do is get the mixture so that your eyes arent watering, and your not smelling gas, and the motor does not bog at all when revved. (Although it might bog if you have an itake gasket or vaccuum leak of some sort, but this is an entire seperate issue.) If the idle itself is smooth, and either too fast or low, the fast idle adjust will take care of it.

Its really a matter of fine tuning between 1 and 2.5 turns out on the mixture screws (1.25 turns was my magic # if that helps)

*WHEN ADJUSTING IDLE MIXTURE BE SURE TO TURN NO MORE THAN 1/8 TURN AT A TIME ON BOTH SCREWS OF THE SAME FLOAT BOWL EQUALLY*

Then when the idle is all nice and smooth jsut set the speed and your good to go .

Im sure everyone has their own way, but I like to set the mixture first. This was just the easiest for me. and if your using a choke you may have to do things a little different.

Its really best to wait till the engine is up to temperature to tune the carb

And if you didnt know, after you start the car the first time, its best to leave it running to hear whats going on as your adjusting it. This is really more of a fine art than a scienc eI discoverd
