Big Juice Duster gets....well, dusted

The other day I saw a really mean looking muscle car. It revved at me, and sounded like a 9-10 second car. I don't like to street race any more, and I was quite intimidated, so I let it fly.
Today, I was cruising home for lunch in 90 degree weather, and noticed that my engine was pulling really good vacuum. The air was very dry, no humidity at all (rare).
As I was pondering this, the same muscle car passes me going the other way. He revs at me again. There is no one else on the whole street and he stared at me when he was revving. That was it enough for me to make a u-turn this time.
I find myself side by side with him, a deserted two lane road ahead, and that old familiar racing blood boiling through my veins. "What kind of car is that?" - I ask casually. "A Duster."- he says with a grin, and I can barely hear him over the rumble of his engine as it rocks the car back and forth at idle. The car looks gutted and there is a huge tachometer on the dash. It looks like someone just took the roll cage and wheelie bars off it. I complement him on his ride, he does the same. The light turns green and I shout "Let me see what that thing's got!", before I pull ahead and hold my 1st gear at 3000 rpm. He rolls forward, and when he gets to my rear bumper there is a thunderous roar as he lets it rip, accompanied by the screetch of his super wide street tires. My boost comes in just as he levels with me, and I find myself revving 1st to 8500 rpm, not willing to give up the strong, smooth pull that will be followed by the mess when I shift to second. He chirps second violently, but is falling behind as I wiggle left to right in second gear, all the way up to the redline. Suprisingly, I pulled very hard through 2nd even though there was enough tire spin to toss my rear end side to side, making it hard to stay in one lane. This in not a problem for the Duster though as he is several cars back by the time I ease it into 3rd, and lets off shortly after. The joy of victory mixes with the adrenaline rush as I force a calm smile, and give him thumbs up.
"Be careful driving around" - I say, in a lame attempt to make up for my irresponsible behavior. The last thing I hear is: "I'll see you around. I'm building an SRT-4 with a roll cage. I'll see you again." The Mopar roars away. Suddenly it doesn't seem so scary any more.

Let this be a lesson to all the big V8s out there that think they can beat me because I only have around 350 wheel horsepower, and don't prefer to street race.

No Traction can be a problem

So he's building an SRT-4 WITH A ROLL CAGE?! Oh shit, you are in trouble.

Once that roll cage goes in that neon, it's all over....you might as well burn your 7 and call it a day.

Dusters were the Civics of their day.

At the risk of showing my age the Duster was one bad ass car back in the 70s. Most of them came with a straight 6, but you could order them with a 440/six pack (3 2 barrel carbs). Lots of Horse power stock, no real need to mod under the hood. Just add slicks and go!!

That's the thing. For every person that thought the Duster was a sweet ride, there was another person who thought it was a bargain basement vehicle w/ a fatty 440 in it. This goes for something similar to a SRT-4 these days. You can't deny it's bargain bin heritage. What was attractive was that it was a cheap (relatively), light, and fast car. Looks on the other hand...ehh.

The Duster, Demon and Swinger all fast A-Body cars of their day, late 60s. Light weight packing a 340ci motor. Nice machines would love to restore a 69 Swinger myself with the sweet bumble bee stripe on the back!
