Anyone like Probes?

alrightttt, so I know probes/6's are the red headed stepchild of the mazda sports cars...less style than miatas, less power than rex's...but hey, I still lovem even now. That said, heres a few of my old kills from my probe days.

note: I hold people who race with passangers in very low regard, this was the first and last time I have raced with a passanger. If you want to race, don't kill someone else with you.

I'll start with my favorite. I was driving my girlfriend(at the time) home from the movies, we were in the "inner city" of the area. Minding my own business, here goes a silver Avenger, with dual exhaust(lol???) blowing by me, just to have to slide to a stop at the light. at the light, I spin my wheels in a puddle pretty bad, and then pass him after he'd pulled maybe 2 cars on me. at the next light, he and his girlfriend are laughing "don't even try". so now I'm a little angry..prides a little hurt. I follow this beater of a car up onto the highway, and blow past him on the ramp. I slow down to 65 and we line up for a few seconds. he guns it, I drop to third and completely wreck his world. last I saw, he was fading into the rear view mirror as i got off at the next exit.

Next one, another favorite. I was stopped at a red light, when this loud 3g eclipse GT rolls up next to me, all black, lowered, vynal dragon decals. of course, another idiot with his girlfriend. he makes a remark, they both laugh, and he starts revving. I rev in responce, and the light fgoes green. can someone say bad driver? he stalls...at the next light, his girlfriends still laughing, he's not. next light goes green, at this light, the right lane ends after about 500ft, so someones gotta win here. in first he's bout at my door, but by second, those tall gears killed him, and I got away clean, with a couple hundred feet to spare.

:owned:

Let us not forget the Stealth RS on the highway. This was some older guy, middle aged, I'd say. I wasn't going to race, I was on my way to a luau and wasn't looking to be detoured by a cop...of course some people just want to bug you. this guy kept passing me, slowing down to 5 below the speed limit, then blowing by me again..finally on the third time, I dropped to 3rd and ate his car alive..To those of you who are getting to your mid 40's, I say Go! Get a sports car! but not a 3800lb paperweight..not if your going to be wanting to race anyway.

Those were my fav's...of course, there were all the little civics/integras.

Since I posted so my kills, its only right to post my most noteable loss.
There is a white, kitted GSX always flying around here. One day, I noticed i was behind this thing, so fine we end up getting on the highway together. I figure why not race, I mean hell..its just an eclipse, and its kitted, so it shouldn't be too bad...well apparently the body kit isn't the only thing done to this car...my poor little probe is pouring its heart out, but this guy was GONE..absolutely gone. found out later that it runs low 11's...ya, it was gone.

Oh, hell. That reminds me of another loss my probe took, I was riding shotgun though, a differnt girlfriend was driving it..this was maybe a month after I got the thing, and I didn't know what an RX-7 was :bash: so, I tell her to shift to second when the guy infront of the 7 turned. she did, and the 7 was gone...it didn't help that she missed 3rd...and 4th...but I talked to a guy who knew the guy who owned the car...yeah, low 10's. so thats that..haven't seen that car before or since that night, shame though. the thing did blow clouds of blue smoke when it shifted.

And those are my bedtime stories. hope noone goes braindead reading them =D

sorry, I forgot to post mods.

for the first 3 races, I had a racitve short ram air intake, 8.5mm magnacore wires, 2.5" catback with a 2.5" tp. Also, the VRIS was in perfect working condition, so i think this helped quite a bit.

the race against the 7 was bone stock.

Force13B 09-01-05 11:04 AM

I race a probe with exhaust in my semi-stock FD. He did better then a few RSX's that thought they where cool and those are new cars. Nice kill write up.

There is no such thing as a stealth RS. And if it was a ES it is a 222 HP DOHC V6 and no it dosnt weigh 3800lb's, that would be the R/T Twin Turbo model. Sorry bro i dont think your probe would be able to "eat him alive"

Jager 09-09-05 02:18 PM

Eh, they arent faster then a rex, my TII would hand a Probe owner his ass. My NA also has never had a problem with a Probe :).

Richard Miller 09-09-05 02:32 PM

any one like probes? oh the opportunities that lie within that question

ill post pictures of my old probe

superstock2 09-09-05 07:08 PM

the only thing probes should be used for is fuel for the refineries that make gas and oil for my rx-7. or melted down so that they may be reincarneted into some other horrible car that high school kids can drive, and i can walk all over.

superstock2 09-09-05 07:09 PM

wo sorry i blacked when i read the title "anyone like probes?"

superstock2 09-09-05 07:11 PM

j/k

Warui Shujin 09-09-05 11:47 PM

Hey, Probes are nice cars. I was looking at buying one for a daily driver for while. They have nice handling, decent power, and they don't gulp fuel like my seven. ;)

Rtry-turboII 09-10-05 12:23 AM

I wanted a mazda MX6 when I was in HS mainly because no one else had one or was modding one, then I saw that yellow one on mischief, *bleh*.

The rule seems to be that the slower the car a person has, the bigger the "race ego" is and the louder the girlfriend in the passenger seat giggles until they get beat. You'd think the girlfriends would spend their time with a better class of people.

I had a 1g Probe turbo 2.2 years back. Very torquey for a 4-cylinder, but the turbo felt on/off. A catback and 5 more psi completely changed the car. Boost would then start building smoothly from 1500 rpms, and you could lug it around at 1000rpms if you wanted, and the midrange was great. It truly felt like a small V8. It had nothing above 5k, so, again, it felt like a small V8. ;)

Fun, roomy car, and the power delivery was great for zipping around town. Turbo Probes might be the most torque-steering car in history, though. Floor it in second, and around 4000rpms the car wants to make an unintended lane change. I don't know how the guys who have some real mods on the cars drive them every day. I'd probably still have one if they were RWD.

StealthFox 09-12-05 03:26 AM

whats the probe im thinking of the is RWD, i know a guy that drifts one pretty well. can you help me out deusx

RX187 09-12-05 10:41 AM

Theres a RWD probe??? I thought they were all FWD. I'm pretty sure they are all FWD unless i'm mistaken.

Nice cars, short gearing, my friend has one, i drove it home for him when he bought it. (he didn't know how to drive manual at the time)

its nice but too bad the owner before had cut the springs to lower it, so handling is off, he's looking to buy new springs now.

its a '93 Probe GT, so the V6 model.

He went and got a 60k tune up done on it, with new alternator, belts, fluids, etc etc, and then about 2 weeks later i raced him in my '99 protege (1.8L= 122 flywheel hp) (Before i had my 7)
I beat him by ~quarter of a car, race was from 30kph - 130kph, and the only times i pulled on him was during shifting, and a very very slight (VERY slight) pull in high RPM (like form 5000RPM - 6500RPM i would pull about half a foot to 1 foot)

I thought he would beat the protege no problem, but i geuss not, he says its cuz i'm a way better driver than him.

Then another day we did a highway pull, (again protege vs probe), same outcome was happening in 3rd gear, and then in 4th gear, but then we shifted into 5th, and he just all of a sudden pulled. I was like nice, there the extra 40hp made by his engine is shown.

afterwards i was looking at the cruising RPM speeds at different speeds, and his 5th gear is geared shorter than the proteges 5th gear, well from how our tires are setup and etc etc etc etc (u know all that stuff)...

so they are pretty nice cars, its even with my protege upto 4th gear, and just pulls in 5th gear...

I took him in a ride in my '86 RX-7 GXL, and he said its definately faster than his probe (the 7 is stock) but then i envy him when we pull upto the gas stations :P

Jager 09-12-05 12:22 PM

Its true, no such thing as a RWD probe. The person was probably watching a 240sx or something.

nice little story, do you how much do the s4 gxls weigh? i i know they have 157 or 156 hp but dont know how much they weigh. im also curious how much my stock s5 GTU(the base model for series 5) weighs. i plan on doing a 50 shot nitrous on top of my 200hp(im pretty sure its about 200 because it has 180hp stock plus about 20 between an intake/catback, which ive heard is safe to assume because the FC's are very receptive to mods)

Jager 09-13-05 01:54 AM

An s4GXL weight about 2750 stock and makes 146 HP. Your stock GTU will weigh more then that, check http://www.autotrader.com for your car's weight. Its 160HP stock and even after that you'll make only 115-130ish to the wheels with an intake and cat-back, since I doubt you hava a true cold air intake and a cat-back doesn't truely free alot of HP. The nitrous will give you 20-30 to the wheels, so you're at about 135ish.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

StealthFox 09-13-05 02:30 AM

well, if you want to get technical i wasnt talking about wheel horsepower, in that case if you really want to get technical my engine is about 132k and probably doesnt make the 160 flywheel, and yes i do have a CAI as well FYI. but it doesnt matter its just a beater motor untill my 350rwhp rebuilt/aggressively streetported GT35R'ed motor is done ;D

-edit-
i would also doubt auto trader to be the definitive automotive information source too, and i think logic will tell you a base FC with no power anything in it is lighter compared to a loaded GXL with electronics everywhere and leather with an audio system.

Max_Spd 09-13-05 12:23 PM

HEHE

You guys argue alot...lol

Anyways I owned a 1994 Probe GT V-6 as my first car, I love the way the V-6 models looks, feel, handle, sound...not big on the I-4 and base models...I still looks at them and still want mine back...I've had it since i was 16 first year of my license...and got a ticket 38-25 2 weeks after i got it...lol

Here is the info on it...

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/742024

I did quite a bit as you can imagine...

But to add to the comment and arguments,

As faar as the torque steer i got an LSD as should those with hight horsepower, Quaife is the one for the Probes...
As faar as the gearing is conserned, 3rd, 5th, are the faster on the V-6 models...and LSD helps dramatically which I did on mine...snow time was much more fun with it...
Kill stories, well as you all know auto is slow, compared to the manual but sometimes you have people who dont know know how to properly race their Manual and loose to a slower auto...so that should resolve some issues on doubting of the cars that Probe ^^^ started...
Well I do have some of my own and my friends, well to start my friend got a 96 PGT and he kicked the selica GT-s in 3rd, it kept up untill that...he did the same to a new GT Eclipse and all other non turbo, all-wheel drive eclipses, GST,GSX, he whooped civics and integras and the usual crowd...and all he has is an intake, wires, plugs, cat-back

ME?, I got to beet stealth, NON-turbo, V-6 mustangs all years, even halfway stock...kept up for 2 gears with 3rd G 7, gained on a CLK and kompressor and beat them, I love 3rd, my favorite gear...Kept up with older V-8 stock mustang (even), Avenger, Whooped celicas all years, whooped and 2nd G 7 I beleive non-turbo, but not certain...could have been a bad driver or an automatic, I am probably forgetting a bunch but you have an idea of what probes are capable of, they do have guts for being an early 90's car, both in design and power...

Feedback welcome...lol

Jager 09-13-05 01:18 PM

S4 GXL = 2680 from Icemark

s5 couple = 2800
http://auto.consumerguide.com/Auto/Used/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/2345/act/usedcarreviewshowall/[/url].

Fyi.

RX187 09-13-05 08:51 PM

OKay from what i know

'93 Probe GT's (the V6 ones(i think 2.5L KL01)
weight is about 3000lbs
power is about 164hp@6000RPM
torque is about 156hp@4000RPM
power to weight = 18.29lbs/hp

my 99 Protege (1.8L FP-DE)
weight is about 2450lbs
power is about 122hp@6000RPM
torque is about 120lbs/ft@4000RPM
power to weight = 20.08lbs/hp

my 86 GXL (1.3L 13B)
weight is about 2700lbs
power is about 146hp@6600RPM
torque is about 138lbs/ft@3500RPM
power to weight = 18.49lbs/hp

now thats just stuff on paper, the driver makes a huge difference in the outcome, you also gotta see how the power curve looks on each of these cars

but on paper, the probe is the best, just edging out the 7, and obviously killing the protege in power to weight...

but in my experience i've just beaten a probe in the protege so theres alot of factors to the outcome,

they are decent cars though, i like my friends probe, its nice, a bit big for me, but still they are pretty nice cars... nice enough to whoop on day after day in a 7 :P lol

****the information i provided above is just off the top of my head, so take it with a grain of salt, i do not claim that any of the info is absolutely right****

vspecpgt 09-14-05 08:27 AM

i had a 96 probe gt that i turbocharged. it made 243 whp at ~5 psi. that was untuned too, as it had a stock ECU and was just getting more fuel by a rising rate FPR.

hahaha, how did I know you'd find this thread.

Jager 09-14-05 10:57 AM

Are they pretty easy to turbocharge? I checked into it a little and seen a big lack of kits.

Tim Benton 09-14-05 11:34 AM

I had a 93 PGT and loved it since it was my first sports coupe back when I was in college. Sold it to a friend to get the FD back in late 94ish and he inturned dropped the KLZE and other mods in it which made it a decent sleeper at the time. I still have a soft spot for PGT's when I see them on the road.

Tim
