'87 N/A vs. Porsche 911

Before any of you get too excited with your flamethrowers, this wasn't a drag race. Also, I didn't really "win".

So, here's the story:

If any of you are familiar with the Radnor area around Villanova University, you're aware that it is basically curvy backroads dotted by mansions. Ever since my friend did the 24 hour test drive of a Saab convertible from GM and drove me around pushing that car's pathetic limits, I've been waiting to give him a ride in my RX-7. The weather finally cleared up and it was on.

I'm cruising these backroads doing the whole "spirited driving" thing and a red widebody 911 turbo, late eighties or early nineties, drives by going the opposite direction at almost WOT going up a hill. Needless to say, I was both impressed by the MEAN exhaust note and wished I could've played with him. Five minutes later, I find myself at a stoplight and check out my rearview mirror: a new-looking red 911 is right behind me, about to follow me onto a one lane road. I'm not sure what was going through his mind when he was observing my bling bling RB catback and my "1308CC" vanity plate, but I doubt it was complimentary.

The next couple minutes were spent showing the 911 driver the old adage of "RX-7's love the twisties". The road was indeed quite twisty and the speed limit was marked 25. According to my friend, I was going 80-85, but since I think I was in third and not close to redlining it, it was probably a bit below that figure. Going as fast as I was on such a winding road, I spent 99% of my concentration on what was in front of me, so I only glanced behind a few times to see if he was keeping up. Naturally, he took the bait and was keeping pace, but hopefully with a new-found respect for the rotary.

It was satisfying making my friend (6'4" 220 lb ex college football player) almost "shit his pants".

Sorry for the long post, but I felt some of you just might be bored enough to read it. I've had some "real" kills in this car in the few months I've had it, but nothing worth writing about.

Mods in sig.

Props to you for staying within your limits. I'm guessing the P-driver also knew his limits and didn't attempt any risky passes on the curvies.

My FC with stock worn-out GTU suspension with sticky Dunlops had about twice the cornering ability of my Porsche - but it was no 911...

not bad...

Yeah, for all I know the Porsche driver could have gone 10 mph faster than me through the curves, but I was in front and he had nowhere to go :)

My car is on the lighter side of FC's and the brakes I have are designed to stop a heavy assed t2; not to mention the hawk pads. It's confidence inspiring.

this has been one of the better storys latly

some people may bragg about their fast cars in the 1/4mile but on curvy roads their times really dont matter.

sweet though man. i wish i had the chance to go at some twisties with any year porshe (specially a 911) and see how my car stacks up.. only thing i'ge gone up against in some twisties worth while was other RX-7's (not worthwile a cavy ford tempo and other very sad cars)

/raises hand

It's not really a matter of winning or losing. I only had some fun with a rich Porsche driver, representing the FC.

siamiam 07-04-05 08:41 PM

the 928 is my favorite Porsche, its much more of a highway runner than a canyon cutter though. their heavy weight isnt the best for corners.

2FAST7S 07-04-05 09:24 PM

hehe, is that the one mazda ripped off for the FC's looks??? lol

If i was near your area i'd take you up on the offer!

siamiam 07-04-05 09:26 PM

it was the 944 that the FC looked more like
