378whp 344.7trq FD vs 387whp 420trq EVO vs 500bhp 523trq Viper

Local hang out, Friday night, getting bored.
Talked to a guy who recently had work done to his EVO. Asked him to do a highway run for fun.
The race: 50 to 120, start on the 3rd honk. did it 3 times, he beat me each time fairly consistently. By 120, he has about 2 cars on me.

He showed me his dyno, and it was 387 whp and 420 torque  . I don't know about you guys, but this is the first time I have seen a small turbo charged car having more torque than HP. His car is ~ 3400 lbs, and boosting 29lbs on the stock turbo, another  .

I have a RX6B single and all supporting hardware tuned to 18lbs, stock ports. Dynoed at 378.4whp and 344.7torque.

Half an hour later, a friend shows up in an 04 Viper, stock rating 500bhp and 523torque, setup a race between him and the EVO. I rode on the Viper, same scenario, 3 honks and we are off. A total of 5 runs, each time the EVO won by half a car. The Viper also weighs in at ~3400lbs, it surprised me a bit, I wasn't expecting over 20% drive train loss on the Viper.

It was an exciting night all in all. Sorry guys but the 7 did lose this time, maybe 25lbs of boost??:D

Maybe the evo was lying about what he had.. From a dig I wouldnt be surpised but from a roll the rx7 should have won. even the viper..

few questions....
Were you or the evo on race gas? Did you or the evo brake boost? Do you know how to? I raced a 489awhp Galant VR4, weights about the same as an Evo, and I pulled on him about a car when I brake boosted. If you don't then those cars will get the jump on you and keep it there.

Trexthe3rd 08-20-05 01:53 PM

That's what I thought, but he showed me the his dyno chart and he does have 30% (100ft-lbs) more torque than my car.

FD Rey 08-20-05 01:53 PM

Turn up the boost next time too ;) Also, that torque that he has on you doesn't mean all that much when you're racing from a roll.

We were both on pump gas. As for brake boosting, not sure how you would do that on the highway at 50, step on the gas and brake at the same time? I was in second and doing 6K-6.5K rpm, boost was pretty much instantaneous. Now power shifting may have helped, but not worth the transmission stress.

FD Rey 08-20-05 02:14 PM

^ even though you're at 50 in 2nd it will still take you a little bit of time to build boost as soon as you floor it. Brake boosting is easy to do, and you have full boost as soon as that third honk goes. It really does make a difference, trust me.
Yes, you do brake and accelerate at the same time. Brake with your left foot and press the gas. Keep your eyes on the boost gauge and your speedo. Keep it at a steady speed, play with the brake and gas pressure according to speed and boost. Depending on the speed, I usually see full boost (15psi) while I'm just sitting there. When that third honk goes you take OFF! Try once and you'll see what I'm talking about.

eriksseven 08-20-05 10:11 PM

I'm going to go try that right now... (lol)

FromSilvia2seven 08-20-05 10:36 PM

damn next time you see these cars get a video!!! sorry you got killed

matty 08-20-05 11:15 PM

i was thinking you would beat him since your rwhp is similar yet u weigh 700 lbs less

The EVO was probably 3400 with driver. Most weight 3175 once you put on a 3''TBE, but you would have to ask the owner for clarification. Either that or he had one hell of a stereo in that thing to weigh that much. The difference was probably closer to 400lbs.

Here is a dyno sheet of a 385awhp EVO I'm sure the average HP over the RPM range is better than a 378rwhp rotary, but you be the judge. The boost will spike to 29 and then taper down to 22ish at redline.

Your looking at 360rwhp and up for over 3000 rpm's. It would be nice to compare graphs.

jksolid 08-21-05 06:44 PM

IF you said he recently did work to it then the dyno chart is probally outdated. Nice races.

G's 3rd Gen 08-21-05 07:30 PM

something is not adding up....

Trexthe3rd, where exactly is this local hangout on Friday's? I'm in the Atl area, and would like to come out.

The dyno chart had 8/17/05 on it.

BP parking lot, 85 and Pleasant Hill.

Jasil 08-21-05 08:11 PM

The highest stock turbo dyno for a EVO is 404awhp, so it won't get much higher than the one he posted.

Look at the graph I posted that's why the FD lost. The car with the highest avg. hp over the RPM raced will win. There aren't any 375rwhp peak rotaries that will average 365rwhp from 5-8K, while the EVO was in the 360-370awhp the whole way.

I disagree....
MY stock twin car makes 345-360 for the whole power band. i would say 360ish is maintained for 1500-2000rpms.
i think i would beat a 380 evo with my car, given the weight advantage, especially on the hwy. I have no idea why this guy lost.

Jasil 08-22-05 10:00 AM

Matty, can you post a dynosheet, so we can compare it to the one I posted? Most of the rotary dynosheets I see aren't getting over 250rwhp by 5000rpms when the peak is 375rwhp.

The one I posted showed 360-388awhp from 4500-7500rpms.

dubulup 08-22-05 10:08 AM

so would you beat the Viper?

i dont have a scanner. Maybe if i am bored tonight i will recreate it on excel. Can u take my word for it? not 100% sure what my power is at 5k rpms as i dotn have it front of me...but who really cares as when racing u are above 5k rpms. Another thing that was interesting was that my power didnt drop off over 7k as it does with most stock ported engines. I thinkt he reasoning is that my afr is 10.8-.9 but above 7k its 11.2'ish.

Trexthe3rd 08-22-05 10:53 AM

Jasil, here is my dyno chart:
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...hmentid=127795

The blue plot is where I'm at, so I wouldn't say that I'm not getting over 250 by 5K.

Matty, I love my car as much as the next person, but I am in no way under the delusion that the FD is unbeatable. And as dubulup said, if you believe you can beat an EVO with 387whp and 420ft-lbs of torque with your car (which by the way beat a '04 Viper with 500bhp and 523toruqe) you are way too full of your self and your car.
