Will these mods put me out of stock class?

I could look up the rulebook, but I figured you guys would know. I have a 94 FD, bone stock, and I want to autoX it in SS.

I took it the the RX7store and they suggested that I put in a M2 downpipe and a boost gauge on the A pillar. Will either of these mods put me out of the stock class? The only reason I want them is to improve reliability.

Also, anything else I should have done to my FD before I race it?

Thanks for your help!

Technically speaking, yes, that puts you out of SS. Now, your competition isn't really going to gripe all that much about a DP. But, if you have that stickler for rules lurking around your club(s), then you might get protested. Personally, I wouldn't sweat it. Z06 drivers will still eat you alive. ;)

The boost gauge is perfectly legal.

Technically yes, the DP is definitely illegal. But like Red said, I doubt anyone will care.

Mods? Nope, just go race it and have fun.

Super Stock

I am currently running SS in NC with a '94 PEG. As stated any mods before the cat are illegal. My mods are:

Koni adjustables (single front/dual rear)
Solid front sway bar
Straight pipe from cat back
R2 Strut tower bar
Axxis ultimate pads
Scroth 3 point harness
Kumho Victoracers on a second set of stock rims

All of these have helped my car get faster, but seat time is the key. I would say that at least half of the time improvements over the last three years of running SOLOII are from seat time (and 2 EVO Schools).

Just take what you got to several events and get used to driving the car. For sure, don't wait 'til you think the car is ready - it is already!

Thanks for the input everyone. I totally agree that what I need is seat time. I have been racing my Celica GTS in DS and doing ok, but I just got this RX and I wanted to try it out. The downpipe is purely for reliability purposes, but it looks like it'll put me out of stock. I guess it's no big deal to run the street prepared class - I don't really care about winning, just driving!

Hey tpdrx7, what size kumos are you running on your stock rims? I need to order a set.

On stock rims everyone goes for 245/45/16. Sizes actually vary by manufacturer though, as 245/45 Kumho Victoracers are slightly narrower than 245/45 Hoosiers. First time I noticed this was when I had a stack of each in my garage. The Hoosier pile was a couple inches taller even though it was the same "size".

Just to add, I don't think illegal parts have ever come into play in our local club unless you're winning. If you're not stealing someone's points or trophy, they're very unlikely to fuss about or even notice a DP. Just go have fun.

Wait, I can't let Tomas get some pictures in here without posting mine... ;)

And to add, we're the perfect example of parts vs skill. Even with my single turbo, I don't beat him in his "stock" trim. Must be those Kuhmos.... ;)

thanks for the info on the kuhmos Damonb, think i might try these new Hankook ventus Z211. if they are in production yet for our size. check it out hankooktireusa.com they are the spec tire for the miata cup championship

Only size they are available in is the Spec Miata size. I haven't heard when more are available.

why dont you just gut the downpipe?

sevenup 07-26-03 04:35 AM

snaproll, i run ss with an m2 downpipe .no one cares or has a clue. like the man said if your not winng they could care less. The heat will kill your motor, get that precat out of there. Also finally made contact with the right person at hankook tires and the larger size z211 will be out in August

245/45-16 VictoRacers. It was recommended to stay with the Victos @ 245 vs the Ecsta's @ 225 section width.

Make sure to get them shaved and 'cycled.

Don't let everyone else fool ya'. People have been (and still are) running this car reliably and competitively with the precat for 10 years. If it's broke fix it, if not spend the money on tires or shocks - that'll make a bigger difference.

Thanks Nathan! Man, that's an awful lot of hardware! You need to quit spending all your money on straight line power and get those 10 year old shocks replaced! ;)

See ya' at Dixie!
