Wieght reduction with a holesaw
 

ok i was reading on some back issues of superstreet. Ok yeah go ahead and flame me for that. But then i came upon an article about the second fastest skyline GTR in the street class i think it was (not for sure). And I was reading along and i se a pic of the door and it looks like someone took a hole saw to the door. I thought it looked kinda cool personally. But anyways what kind of wieght savings could be expected from this. Also does it make the door ummmmm oh whats the word. Flimsy.

Not much, but every little bit helps. I'm guessing the inner door skins are about 26 guage which weighs 0.75lbs. per sq.ft., so he may have taken 1 pound of each door.

That's old school....... Hot rodders were doing that 30 years ago. I think NHRA banned it.

well i wanna do it just cause it looks cool. But i wonder if it will cause the door to be week

about how weak would it be I my just get an old door and try this to see what all wieght can be savvedfrom this and how weak the door would be. I ma just curious that is all

My doors are little more than a skin. I left just enough material around the edges so they don't wobble too bad when opened. I've cut the side impact beams out, which with the inner doors structure and the window hardware probably cut 25 lbs per door. When you put in Nascar style door bars you have no choice.

Penske did something like that back in the real Trans Am days but it wasn't for weight savings (they acid dipped the chassis for that!). They removed the front wheel well liners, cut huge holes in the front and rear of the door frames as well as the rear quarter panels that led into the rear wheel wells. Any air that became trapped in the front wheel wells now was able to literally pass through the car by traveling from the back of the front fenders, into and through the door panel and then out the rear fenders. Is that cool or what? :bigthumb:

I would ban the idea if it is for a street driven car.

I also would not recommend it for a track car.
It would be better if you made fiberglass or if you have the money, carbonfiber doors.

well im poor and fat so every ounce counts to me. What you pictured is mainly what i was going to do. Like i said im gonna get a set of door from a pay and pull and just see if it would work on a street car.

but carbon fiber doors where can i get a set.

Absolute bad idea on a streetcar. The structural integrity during an accident will be garbage.


I like those days. I think the series needs a change. It is sad how bad it has become. I think they should hit the filing cabinet and pull out a rule book from say -1972. Update the safety parts of it and use that for 2006. Bring it back down a notch to the days where you started with a shell and prepped the car.

World Challenge, rally, touring cars........I am fond of all those tub based classes. Trans-am has some great history. It has gone way down hill and needs to be fixed. I won't blame anyone for it but it needs to change hands and move forward.
