Awesome looking beast

ROTORhead93 09-12-04 10:53 PM

your car looks simply amazing, where did you get the mazdaspeed front bumper?

Carl Byck 09-12-04 11:23 PM

Best to search my threads, but the nose, and the hood are custom, each is one of 6-10 built to justify the production cost. As far as I know there are none of either currently in use. The nose was actually used on one car which was since wrecked. The car is an absolute one off, nothing like it in AU, USA, or Japan that I know of. That means nothing on the net, that combines the widebody with the other features. Hours were spent getting the angular lines of the FC to mate to the rounded shapes of the FD nose, and hood. Many of the angles on the stock FC were softened, while the FD parts were made slightly more angular to come up with one cohesive shape. Carl

Sharp looking car, Carl. The nose on that thing definitely takes some getting used to, tho!

Oh, and nice color. My street car is almost identical but with lots of metalflake. ;)

ROTORhead93 09-13-04 06:11 PM

So whats the first track day your going to be taking it to? I'm pretty close to you and I would love to see that thing in person. Maybe even take a ride in it??? :D

aka_rocket 09-13-04 06:25 PM

that is truely an awesome blend you got there.
props to you.

M's 09-13-04 06:56 PM

Carl, looks good. I'd appreciate it if you'd respond to the PM i sent you a few months back about suspension components. Thanks

Carl Byck 09-13-04 07:05 PM

Thank you for the comments gentlemen. M's, I checked my PMs back to April, I do not see your post. Drop me a line at 707-696-2705, and we can talk about the suspension. Carl

Figure late October for the track, I am building a 700rwhp Supra currently, and will not have time to have this car track ready until then.

Where is the air going from the openings on each side intercooler? Do I see the tubing going into/out of the intercooler passing thru these openings? Does the air going thru these openings have any other place to go besides the center of the brake rotors? If the openings are not completely sealed, then it is going to cause front lift.

rynberg 09-14-04 10:02 AM

Hey Carl,

Glad you're getting close to finishing the car! I look forward to seeing it in action, sometime.

Tyler

Carl Byck 09-14-04 01:14 PM

The side openings will have ducts in them (which will be sealed)to direct all that air to the brakes via AWR ducting. The center openings will be boxed, partioned(IC/Raditor/oil coolers) and sealed to the undertray(and directted up to the hood ducts). The front undertray is a flat bottom that extends to the front cross member. The top surface of the hood will have additional openings ALA the EVO VIII. These openings will have a marginally larger total area than the front openings to further aid in evacuating the under hood air. The front fenders may be louvered to add front downforce as required, and I anticipate a slightly larger wing in the future to balance the DF created by the splitter, any louvering we do, and any additional winglets we add to the sides of the nose, or dams added to the splitter. We will be experimenting with wing height as well. We are on the low side in terms of wing placement currently. As you can tell we have a tremendous amount testing to do to dial in the aero. Expect at least a diffuser (like the World Challenge Vipers) , and perhaps a venturi tunnel in the rear of the car in its final iteration. Hopefully that begins to answer your concerns Re the aero properties of the car. We also intend to replace tghe splitter with a more substantial piece. I will now begin the search for sponsors to aid me in bringing the Aero end of things to full fruition. LOTS OF TESTING to follow... :D

Kenku 09-15-04 12:05 AM

Mein gott. First FC I've seen that I flat out like. Aero's going to be a headache to do well and truly right, but still. Might want to look at some of what Mazda was doing with the IMSA cars, but just a random thought.

Carl Byck 09-15-04 10:40 AM

I am using old IMSA, and alot of Japanese GT cars as general guides. It will be a huge project to get the aero right, but since I run in an unlimited class, design is open. In fact if anyone has pictures with detail that would be useful to this end please post them, or email them to me at cbyck@ybhc.com

Carl Byck 09-15-04 01:21 PM

To continue, I am taking alot of leads from the Lemans GT cars with similar chassis profiles(long nose short cabin, hatch back, like the ferrari, and the viper). Ultimately, alot will be a guess, since I will never have the 50K worth of datalogging equipment/a wind tunnel required to really anylize the efficasy of my design. It will be functional, but certainly not optimized. At this point a major goal is to make it safe, ie, that I do not do something that make either end unstable, or light at speed.

diyman25 09-15-04 03:19 PM

Hope one day I can see your Monster in SCA's race track...

TYSON 09-15-04 08:55 PM

OTC next year Carl? :bigthumb:

Carl Byck 09-16-04 11:08 AM

I hope so Tyson, I would only do it if I could pull it off driving it track to track. I am thinking 335 TOYO RA-1s all around, possibly two sets of V710s. I need to read the rules, and see what my options are. It is a distinct possibilty(likelyhood even). I would get killed in the race trailered classes, but I think I can hang (maybe even do well) with the street driven cars. That would be the ultimate in laying the myth of Rotary unreliability to rest. Imagine a ~450rwhp 17 year old rotary doing well in that venue, now that would be very satisfying:D
Now that the exterior is done, I can move forward in my quest for partners(sponsors), to help tweak, and maximize the reliability of the mechanicals.
"I have a dream"... Some day I will drive my RX7 to the track equiped only with a bottle of Armorall, and a California Duster:)

TYSON 09-16-04 11:24 AM

Rules for this year were 140 treadwear plus for the Touring (no trailer) class.

Carl Byck 09-16-04 01:51 PM

Well then I guess it would be 315-35-17 BFG TA KD all around. Unless someone knows of another option. I suppose the tires have to be DOT, ie no JDM tires... Yes?

Carl Byck 09-16-04 02:07 PM

looks like I could run T3, looking at the '04 times, I think I could be competitive, although I have never driven those tracks on street tires, so it is hard to say. I will shut up now, since this type of bench racing will see me flamed to the ground in short order;) (and would be well deserved:D )

dreamnshadow 09-16-04 03:24 PM

just looked at the otc, something i will try to get into in the future. does anyone have any info on the currect FC on OTC? i couldnt find any.

Carl Byck 09-16-04 04:49 PM

Those guys won their class two years ago, read their bio on the site. It is a very modest car, close to stock. They basicly ran the event like an endurance event, and outlasted their competition. Carl
