Whoa! A good example of how AutoX has made me a better driver:
 

On my drive home today from work, it started to POUR. Like cats and frickin' dogs POUR. Everyone's going 30MPH in a 45 and it's standing water city. I'm in the right lane of a four lane divided road. In the lane next to me, about 5-10 feet ahead, is a minivan.
As we approach a GREEN stoplight, she gets HARD on the brakes and dives for the shoulder.
The RIGHT shoulder.
Right in front of me.
I'm all over the brakes and aiming for the shoulder (with its QUICKLY approching signal posts and telephone poles) and the front tires lock up amidst a GIGANTIC puddle (I'm in the Jeep, mind you). Massive understeer. Wall of water all over the place. Without even thinking, I lift slightly on the brakes and dial OUT steering. Despite the fact that this minivan's side door is now mere feet from my fender.

But it works. Traction is regained, I yank the wheel back to the right, and miss the van- jumping the curb in the process. We end up on the far side of the intersection- her on the shoulder, me in the grass, right next to her van. The traffic signal pole is about 2 feet from my headlight. I can look through her passeneger window and she NEVER EVEN LOOKS OVER.
Turns out, there was a fire truck A BLOCK AWAY on the intersecting road headed towards us and she felt the need to head for the shoulder without looking to make sure it was clear..


Pucker factor limit achieved for this week.

Good job... Hopefully next time she'll be in front of an 18 wheeler that can't stop instead of you ;)

Nice move be glad you weren't in the Vette, the curb may not have been so kind.

My best use on the street was driving down the strip in Vegas in the right hand lane in a Minivan full of folks doing a scavenger hunt. We're pushing along around 25-35 and a taxi rolls right out infront of us...I instantly realize braking in a straight line is not going to save this corner (err I mean avoid hitting this taxi). I tap the brakes, quickly validate what i think i see in my mirrors and jerk the van left across two lanes (because he wasn't just rolling out into the right lane and turning, the taxi was rolling out to try and get into the left turn lane) and then back to the right, as I swing back right I gas down on the accelerator and the taxi ends up cutting behind me across into the left turn lane.

Pant, pant, pant....

I agree about autocross reflexes being useful in emergencies. Stupid soccer moms probably don't know about car control at the limits of the traction budget, the same way they don't know about lane use etiquette and the increased probability of a pileup crash when jerking the car around all of a sudden in a panic. Stupid bi&ch.
