Where/how to start road racing?
 

Hello I'm Brent and I recently purchased a 1988 rx7 glx with a rebuilt na 13b. Was told it had a turbo 13b before but blew up on the previous owner. So the car is a bit of a Frankenstein car... missing alot of things like 02 sensor and aux ports acuators. So I purchased this car because I want to race cars and be very competitive. I live in socal in the inland empire area. What is the best organization to get started racing? My main focus right now is to get my car in the basic entry class. So I've been reading scca rule book for e production... I want to start at the lowest level (1 or 2?). So where should I start on building my rx7 to meet race specs and class? Should I follow the scca rule book? If so I have a lot of questions regarding some rules. I need to be pointed in the right direction for my build by others who are experienced in socal racing. Thanks in advance for reading my long post... I've worked my a** off to get my car and can't wait to slowly build it and race!

Some pics of my car ... Things I've done so far is a basic strip down of interior, fixed 4 huge vacuum leaks at engine.
Need to figure out my pulsing revs when the throttle is held anywhere above 1500 rims.
Possible problems
Broken 02 sensor wire. Requires intake removal
Inspect and replace all vacuum lines underneath intake
Replace all intake gaskets and injector o rings
Replace fuel damper
Throttle body valve operation?

Car runs a bit hot- over heat
No radiator shroud- saving for electric fan with thermo switch activating at 180.
Then koyo rad.
2nd oil cooler if class rules allow

After these minor problems focusing on build to be competitive.

Do you have any track driving experience? If not HPDE is going to be your best bet. If you have some track experience and want to get into racing ASAP look into cal club's super school. It's a one weekend racing school where you get your provisional racing license. It's is relatively affordable to enter and is held at buttonwillow raceway.

As far as scca you will probably want to start improved touring (ITS). E production is a serious class with a serious price tag. Not for the faint of heart.

I'm planning on attending super school next march so maybe we'll meet each other there!

Good info guys thanks. I'm going to do the hpde. The license test at button willow sounds good in the future.i finally figured out the pulsing idle issue. Ended up being corrosion at tps sensor connector after fixing 5 vacuum leaks... fixed that with emissions delete and egr block off. And basic tune up like plugs and all filters. New o2 sensor. Just fitted a flex a lite fan for radiator. Waiting for funds so I can get a radiator hose coupled for coolant temp and thermo switch for fan. And a wide band.after that I'm going to take it to Adams track in riverside for a shake down. Maybe run it there a couple times while I save for coil overs and wheels.

In my opinion it's better to use aluminium radiator shroud it will helps your car to reduce heat and it will do better cooling when the engine is idling and needs air flow the most.
