Where in the hell can I buy a surge tank!
 

I have searched the forum and the internet and can't find any except in Australia. Do any of you guys know where I can pick one up?? I found the how to build site but I don't really have the resources to get one built. Thanks!!

Why not go to a welding shop and have one made exactly how you want it?

Austrailia is your best bet, reasonable priced, and freight is really not bad. Alterately, you can get a ~6"x 10-12" piece of aluminum, or stainless pipe, and two pieces of plate, some weld AN fittings, etc. BUY ONE. I made mine witha freind out of stainless, it was not hard, but it would be worth it to buy one next time. try CAPA they have some nice ones for about 150.00 shipped. You can see mine on my members cars page on www.team fc3s.org listed under my name in "most viewed cars" BTW, pack it with CLEAN stainless mill turnings, or coarse stainless wool, and it will prevent slosh in the can when it gets low. Make sure there are no bits that can escape though. Carl

I suppose by now you all roll your eyes when you see my posts... but what the heck... we're out there racing with our low budget FB and earned high points for our class this season (SCCA RS). Plus, I have lots more time than I have money so I build anything I can. If I had to buy all my parts and hire all my work done, I would NEVER have been able to even get close to a racetrack.
Anyhow, I swept the garage floor for the bits I needed to build my surge tank. I used a 9 inch piece of 2.5" steel exhaust pipe, a couple pieces of scrap 1/16" steel for end caps, and a couple chunks of various diameter steel rod (which I gun drilled) for fuel connections. The surge tank is all low pressure so I don't use any fancy AN fittings... just common rubber hose and hose clamps (which I dug out of my "bucket of used parts"). I welded it all up... three or four times till I sealed all the leaks... shot it with the last few ounces of paint from an old aerosol can and had me a surge tank for no cost. By the way, my surge tank has no packing in it. I feel if the fuel tank is so low that the surge tank is sucking air, then I want the car to sputter... so the driver has a clue that it's getting time to pit. Yeah... I'm not so good at watching gages... but when the engine cuts out, then it has my attention.

You do realize that is the point of a surge tank, right? When the gas tank is low, and your low pressure pump only sucks air around a hard turn or something, the engine still gets fuel because it is being fed from the surge tank. If your car still gets fuel starved when your main tank is low, then your surge tank isnt doing its job.

Well I ended up picking one up from Tweakit.net out of Australia. Thanks for all of the input.

Just a note: I have an 8 gallon foam filled fuel cell with one bottom pickup. Before surge tank, my car would start cutting out with 6 gallons remaining in the cell. This was at Pacific Raceways turns 3a & b. WITH my surge tank, the car has never cut out and I've had as little as 1 gallon remaining in the cell. I'm sure I can't get every ounce of fuel out of the cell but I get pretty close. If the car cuts out, I know I have less than a gallon remaining... so , I feel the surge tank is doing a pretty good job.

Now, lets go racing!!!!!!!

That sounds more like it. You could probably create some sort of warning light if you dont like keeping an eye on gauges.
