Where do you keep your fire extinguisher?
I figured this would be most relevant here.
Where do you have your fire extinguisher mounted for normal driving? I have a wonderful little unit that I have attached to the carpet of the passenger's side stuff-box, except it tends to fly off and roll around the back after a hard corner or start or such. The velcro stays attached to the carpet, but the rest of the holder falls apart. I'm going to epoxy it here soon, but it raised a question: Where do other people keep them? Bins make sense, but are a bit slow to get at when needed. -=Russ=- |

In the passenger bin behind the seat. Works well.

Is this for a track only car? If so then try a system like the following...
http://firecharger.com/ But if for ocasional tracking then the bins or a hard strap mounted to a secure area like the floor or a roll bar if you have one. |
Firecharger looks sweet... though the Trogdor-esque mascot is a little cheesy.
I have mine secured with a bracket to the bottom of the driver's side roll bar hoop down near the floor, the bracket is attached to the rollbar with two hose clamps. |
I have an extinguisher bolted to the bottom of the passenger bin of my FD.
If my car were a track car only I would splurge for a true fire suppression system with nozzles in the engine bay and passenger compartment and a great big red handle to yank when things go wrong... |
Fire extinguisher mounted under your / driver's seat right up front.
You need to make sure the furthest forward you're going to be adjusting the seat. With that set, then you can go about mounting the fire extinguisher. I find this placement the fastest and easiest to get to inside the car while in the driver's seat - no twisting, turning, or opening hatches or doors. In a normal driving position, your feet (or any other part of your body) does not go into that area. I can probably access the unit blind if a have to...which is something I have confidence in *if* there's smoke and fire inside the cockpit. Check race regulations and rules about mount locations and type - many have restrictions on placement. -Ted |
My 1st gen is IT prepped, so I use a metal bracket handheld on the center tunnel. I only autocross the car at the moment, if I do get the chance to do Solo 1 or any wheel to wheel stuff I'' do a Firecharger system.
For a street car, I'd mount it on the floor sideways in front of the passenger seat, using a metal bracket (much easier to get to than in front of the drivers' seat). |
Where is a good source for a nice automotive type extinguisher?
I was thinking of a nice polished stainless or chrome looking affair and was wondering if anyone had some good leads. It seems to me that Pegasus has some... I guess I'll check there too. Thanks, Frank |
I have 2.... one directly to my right, inbetween the driver's seat and the "hang on for dear life" seat. The other one is mounted in the passenger side rear corner with a pull cord located in the dash. The rear charger sprays the engine, rear, and right behind the driver.

Fire Extinguisher
I just got mine rechargeable Halon unit from H3R http://www.h3r.com/products/home_vehicle.htm. They had a promotion in August. You can try get yours 10% discount by following these steps.
Select the product(s) you want to buy Click on the "checkout" button Click on the "Redeem Coupon" link Type "1211" in the "Offer number" field Click the "Redeem Coupon" button. |
just a quick comment, on a related tangent: standard dry chemical is cheaper, but if you ever have to actually use it, you'll appreciate having Halon - no cleanup other than from the fire itself. The regular stuff takes forever to clean out of carpet, etc.
|
Mine is mounted in the back of the driver seat...
|
hand-held halon on the tranny tunnel (makes a good elbow pad too to keep your arm off the hot ass tunnel) and a 10# halon system in back w/ 3 seperate spray heads
|
You might want to get an extra fire extinguisher. I heard you need it
