What to do.. what to do?
 

hey all, i have an Fc that i haven't done much to yet and plan on working on soon and i want it to be a pretty special car. The basic idea is that i want to build a car that is legal for SCCA racing and a car i can drive on the street. My problem is that i cant seem to find the rules on all the classes online.. My initial plan was to build a car that weighed about 2600lbs w/me in it and made 200hp N/A. Now im not sure if thats legal in any class and thats ok as the motor is out and awaiting me to figure out what to do.. the interior is stripped and i have a small cage behind the seats which im sure will have to be extended.. so im hoping you guys can tell me what it is that i have to do to race in what class? I think the classes that they race around here are all of the IT classes so one of those would be best.. Thank you for your help:)

If your plan is to end up on track racing, know where you want to be before you start modifying the car. Read the class rules in the GCR, spend money once.

In SCCA road racing your best shot of a street legal race car is ITS. Proper race cars are not comfortable to drive on the street. What happens if you wad it in a ball and can't drive it home? If you want to go W2W racing I suggest buying a truck and trailer and save yourself the hassle. If buying a truck and trailer is to expensive, you may want to rethink racing.

You can do NASA TT with a street car. That might be a better option. The TT/PT rules are not FC friendly.

Greg seems to think we have some super secret magic car that is a class overdog. There is a thread on here that is about building a FC into PT cars. Everyone went about it differently. It has some good info

ITS indeed would be your best shot at a street legal race car without making it VERY hard to drive on the street.

I've done the whole daily driving my race car thing, it sucks, but on a tight budget and a huge passion to get on track sometimes it's the only way. Although you can learn good driving knowing if you stuff it you won't get home. :P It's racing though and it's not always your fault. I will say though now that I have another car to drive on the street and the race car only sees the race track there's far less stress involved and on track driving is far more focused on the driving at hand.

I'd also add it's MUCH cheaper and far less of a headache most of the time to buy a race ready car, it may sound simple to build, just throw a cage in it, a seat, a harness, etc. Then you start doing all the small things and before you know it you've spent a few thousand dollars on just small items.

Read the rule books as mentioned whichever you decide though!
