What auto cross class would I be in?
I plan on starting autocrossing by next month, and I have built a car but I’m not sure what class I’m in.
I have a 89 rx7 convertible with.. Racing beat header Bonez high flow catalytic converter Racing beat y pipe + mufflers Mazdatrix strut tower brace with torque brace Bonez streat comp intake KYB AGX gas adjust shocks/struts all around BF Goodrich traction t/a all around Plan on having \/ by the time I start racing beat sway bar(with polly bushing mounts.) mazdatrix adjustable endlink for the sway bar polly bushings to replace all my links up front so if any one could help me out here I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Tad Murphy -also how are the BF t/a for auto cross? Any one ever use them? |

Nope. You would be in C Street Prepared. The high flow cat would put you into that class over the Street Touring S 2 that was suggested before.

If you have never autocrossed before, don't worry about what class you are in. Depending on the region that you run in, unless you are beating the top drivers in your class they won't usually mind what class you run in and won't be too strict, even though a single modification is what puts you wherever.
Just sign up, drive and have fun. Which T/A's are those tires? |
Just looked over the rules again, and yes, you must use a OE cat for STS2. I saw allot of exhaust allowances in ST and figured it would allow high-flow cats, but apparently not (STX does though)

You are officially obliged to run in the class that the car is supposed to be in with the mods you have. You can generally get away with competing in a slower class if you have only a few mods that push you into the next class, unless you're winning in the slower class. If the general performance level of the car is at or below the level of the lower class, most drivers won't mind, but officially they can protest you and have you disqualified and reclassed into the higher class. If you're open about it they may not mind, but I'd talk to the other drivers in that class my first time out to see if they have a problem with it.
Personally, I run in the class that my car is supposed to be in, SM2, even though I could easily get away with CSP classing, as I'd still be slow compared to them, but I'd rather just go into whatever class I'm supposed to be in and have fun. I don't let some set of rules dictate what I do to my car, I do what I want to do to it and run in whatever class I end up in, whether I'm competetive or not. |
So am I Street Modified2 or what I get confused. I looked at the class info in the book but there are so many LITTLE things that swing me one way or the other. There is some one on the region 103 site that says that I’m in sts2 as well?!?!

Just bring your car to an event, mention the cat converter and the suspension bushings, and ask them what class they think you should run in. I'm sure your car is legal for SM2 (Street Mod, 2-seats).
Your tires will probably keep you from being super-competitive, in any class, for at least the first few events. Just have fun driving your car, don't worry about trophies for at least 6 months. SCCA autocrossing has some weird rules regarding modifications allowed in certain classes. -s- |
I can say for certain you would be at least in SM2.
STS2 not only doesn't allow high flow cats (bonez) it also doesn't allow either trianglutaled strut bars or torque suppression devices (ie: the Mazdatrix bar you have listed). If your mazdatrix bar only goes from Strut to strut (not back to firewall) then you would also be legal for CSP. --kC |

I looked up the rules and your car will fall into CSP. There's nothing that you've listed that'd put you into SM2.
