From what i understand, an FC would be much more suited for auto-x racing. However, i'm more of a straightline guy, and am looking to build a weekend warrior dragger. The FB is a generally a couple hundred pounds lighter than the FC - good for dragging. I also understand the rear is not that strong. Are there upgrades/swaps able to withstand slick-tire launches? Thank you for any input :)

What is an FB?

FB = '81-85 RX-7.

Generally the FB's are more suited for autox since they are narrower and a LOT lighter than the FC. For dragging they are MUCH more suited since the FC rear suspension doesn't have any anti-squat, so straightline traction isn't so great.

Speaking of anti-squat... if you are going to keep the stock rear suspension (no drag style 4 link or ladder bars) it's best to not use the '84-85 chassis since the rear suspension geometry was altered for better roll steer, at the expense of anti-squat. Roll steer doesn't matter that much to a drag racer...

FB = live axle
FC = IRS

huge difference when it comes to dragging....

but will a stock FB rear end handle slicks and some decent power?

depends on what you're calling decent.... a nicely ported motor? Probbaly....

a big turbo motor? probably not...

For drag racing, already having a live axle makes the switch to a Ford 8.8" or 9" not terribly difficult. There are several guys around town who've done it...
