The rubber, maint and travel are the $s :D

haha, ya I guess. All my track time is done within 200 miles of home so those expenses dont add up too much. Wish we had these kind of tracks up in the North

Brent I was at Road Atlanta doing TT in my Lotus Elise that weekend and I came by to chat but you must have been out with a student or something. As you said, it sure was hard to get a clean lap in TT that weekend - that was my first time at Road Atlanta and between the yellow flags and cancelled session I felt like I was just starting to learn the place... on Sunday afternoon! I was also in TTS but only starting to get up to speed: http://www.youtube.com/user/ScottKnott?feature=mhee#p/u so I'm glad I was at least able to help you guys win some tires ;-)

Anyway you were looking good out there and it made me wish I had just done a V8 conversion to my FD. That would have saved me the headaches of dealing with heat issues with my PFS setup. So now I deal with heat issues on my supercharged Lotus instead. Haha I suppose it never ends. Hopefully I'll see you at another NASA event - I'm down in Florida during the winter and do a bunch of Mid-Atlantic NASA and other TT's and rallies in the summer. (see my racing website below for pictures, videos, mods, etc.)

Scott,
Small world! It's amazing how many track guys have owned FD's at one point. Everyone some how also has a connection to Fritz, either buying or selling . Your car looks incredible! I'm pretty sure I remember you running your car at Barber in May 09 and being incredibly fast(track record I believe?). I have to admit as well, I looked you up on youtube to check you out. I think Alex did the same. Let's just say I'm glad it was your first time at Road Atlanta! :D And thanks for the kind words. I'm hoping to get sub 1:30 in TTS trim eventually.

Sorry I missed you. I was prob. in the trailer. I poor man rigged a window AC unit in the trailer for the weekend and it worked out great.

Thanks Damian. Not too big of a deal about the engine. Fairly minor in comparison.

Thanks! I'm liking them too and they have absolutely top notch support.

I've done pretty well the last year in regards to tire thanks to Hoosier. I think I've won 3 sets of tires this season. Hawk has been good to me too. My biggest expense has been fuel to get to the track and hotel.

It's been nice being this close to Road Atlanta and VIR(500 miles away) the last couple of years. I'm def. going to miss having good tracks like this close to me. Hopefully they open up the F1 track for track days within a year or two.

Fritz Flynn 08-23-11 09:48 AM

Is Hawke offering free pads or just a discount?

Regarding the tires, not everyone wins lol

It cost me approx 3k a weekend to track my FD so if I take a couple of weekends off I can buy some Penskes :) I don't have the 1st clue about the cost of tracking the P car other than the frikken tires alone are 1k so I'd imagine it's 4 or 5k per weekend, OUCH!

The faster the lap the skinnier the wallet.

Hi Scott,
I'm trying to recall which FD I bought from you?

Was it the one that was wrecked that I picked up at Dan's shop?

ptrhahn 08-23-11 10:28 AM

^^^^

That's the one. I'm still rocking Scott's '99 turbos :-)

We get hawk bucks... we also get the instructor discount ;) If you don't know what I'm referring to, PM me.

lol You need to run more TT's. You are faster than me, and the farthest back I've finished all year is 3rd.

I see you slinging parts and cars left and right... I know you! Come to think about it, that's why you don't have Penske's, or JRZ's... you sold them....

How do you think I can afford the 3k weekends once or twice a month :icon_tup:

Not so fast; with your new setup I'll be looking at your big yellow ass too along with Wally, Justin, Reid and Alex. Man I sure hope someone will be selling a fast car pretty soon because things aren't looking too good for flyin flynn hehe.

I'll PM you regarding the Hawke bucks.

Every time I see an FD I'm looking to see if any of my parts are on it ;-) glad the 99 turbos are still working out for you Peter, I think I had a thousand miles on them tops. Hope you were ok in DC today - I still have an office on Connecticut Ave and K Street but I'm rarely there... I'm dodging hurricanes on Miami Beach these days instead of earthquakes!

Coulthard Fan 08-23-11 08:52 PM

The Penske's are prettytrick aren't they Brent. I went with the 8100's - not sure what the difference is between those and yours though. For sure they require skipping a few track weekends Fritz, or selling a kidney for the rest of us.

They are! Speaking of Fritz again, he actually sold a set of 8100's last year. They are essentially the same as the newer 8300's. Mine are somewhat similar, only I have more rope to hang myself with.

Quick update on where I stand with the car right now: right now I'm still doing my research on engine stuff as I have plenty of time(would like to get it done as soon as possible, but no need to rush).

I also think I've decided on a new clutch setup that should be good for a second at Road Atlanta/VIR.

I'd like to dig into the aero a little more, but it's kind of hard to do right now.

I'd also like to get a little bit of my cage redone by the local guy in TN that does some really REALLY nice cage work. Since the roofs for our cars are like $90, I may switch to a non sunroof model as well. I'll let Dan be the guinea pig :D

I should have a pretty good idea on my timeline before too long. Once that's nailed down, I'm going to start looking into my track schedule as well. I'm hoping to do the UTCC again next year. I'm also wanting to get some quality seat time at Mid Ohio if I can once I get home in hopes of doing NASA Nationals in 2012, schedule permitting as always.

KKMpunkrock2011 09-21-11 08:42 PM

what class do you run? TTS or TTU?

Brent Dalton 09-22-11 07:25 AM

Tts

RockLobster 09-22-11 11:58 AM

Brent,

Finally read this thread and saw the car in GRM. Love the car. Come play at Road America sometime... ;)

Brent Dalton 09-23-11 10:58 AM

Thanks! I hope to make it up there eventually! It's a 20 hour drive right now though.

Brent Dalton 01-01-12 12:42 AM

and a new clutch to ring in the new year :D

rgordon1979 01-01-12 08:42 PM

Is there a like button on here?!

Brent Dalton 01-03-12 01:19 AM

Thanks dude! How's your car doing and what is your schedule looking like?

rgordon1979 01-03-12 10:07 PM

Car is good, hasn't really been touched in a while. My wife and I are expecting our first so the car has gone neglected! I would love to get that oil cooler on and get out to VIR sometime before the baby comes...we will see!

How are you doing? Back overseas or in Texas? Hope all is well!

Brent Dalton 01-07-12 06:21 AM

Congrats! That's a good reason to neglect the car. Little boy or girl? I'm overseas. Be back sometime in the spring.

rgordon1979 01-08-12 10:05 AM

Doc said he is 97% sure it is a boy, we should get confirmation in about 3 weeks though.

Be safe over there!

Richard.C 02-14-12 06:22 AM

Brent & others with Penske's,

Just wondering if there is a part number for FD fitment for 8100 or 8300 series or if these are a custom order each time?

Richard

Brent Dalton 02-14-12 07:11 AM

Here's the rundown on all the FD Penske owners that I'm tracking:

There aren't any "off the shelf" mass produced Penske shocks for the FD. Penske custom makes them each time to whatever specs the buyer requests. Anze Suspension offers a Penske 8300 for the FD that a couple of FD owners on here have(Carlos and Jake), but it's the same deal... custom made to order. At a minimum, it'll be custom valved based on your needs. The 8300's replaced the 8100's a few years ago so they are fairly similar. Guy Atkeny also does custom Penske's for the FD. The ones that Fingerlock and Andy(SSM AutoX National Champion) run were both made by Guy.

I think the 7565 Penske is probably the best bang for the buck Penske out there. They are double adjustable(with the option to make them triple), a dual bleed shaft, option to make them remote resevoir, etc, etc, etc... The more you add on, the more they add up of course.

Richard.C 02-14-12 01:20 PM

Thanks for the info Brent.

I'm trying to establish which direction I'll go regarding coil overs but it won't be till later in the year. I had 8100's on my AI Mustang but the cost of them now I'm in the UK might be prohibitive, 20% sales tax plus import duty gets a little extortionate.

Richard
