Turbo II 3.0 ring & Pinion

Hi All:
Does anyone know where I can get a ring and pinion somewhere around 2.70 - 3.00 or at least closer to that than the stock 4.xx that we have now?
Thanks,
Jim

That would be one strange gear for a Tll. The normal NA automatics have a 3.9 IIRC, don't know if the turbo cars would go that route too.

Any particular reason you want such a tall gear, heading for the salt flats??

You'd be better off with a 8.8 IRS diff swap.

Years ago, Jim LaBreck was looking into something similar for the FD rearend and found that the cost for a low production R&P is shockingly high. IIRC it was around $1500 each with a certain minimum run. (Want to buy twenty gearsets?) At those prices, the 8.8 setup looks very economical.

Thanks for the input. I knew this was a long shot. I've called all around and can't find anything.
I'll look into the 8.8 swap... maybe it's something we can handle.
This is for our LeMons car which is a V8 powered T II. I'd like to get the rear ratio down so we can run a more reliable 4 speed instead of the fragile 5 speed boxes.

stock t2 5 speed isn't fragile? Local car here runs consistent 9 sec passes on a stock transmission.

V8. The only common V8able 5-speed I can think of is the T5, which rates somewhere between N/A smoothcase and Turbo II on the strength scale.

Given the budget, I wonder how feasible it'd be to just put a solid axle under it. Since you'd have to fab everything, you could run any geometry you wanted. Although, for expedience, it would be hard to go wrong with an F-body's complete axle and torque arm/Panhard setup. It works great for them, it's pre-engineered, and even I can find 3rd-gen drum rears for "pick it up before I scrap it" prices. And the most worthless ones are the ones with 3.23 or taller final drives - perfect!

if you don't mind shifting, the LT T56's are a direct swap for all gen 1 or II v8's (assuming that's what you have) and are cheap to purchase as opposed to their LS cousins. (Cheap as in $600-$700 from the local heap yards)

First would be utterly useless but would pull like a freight train thru 4!

The problem with that is that you can only spend $500 on the whole car, so that kinda blows things right out of the water...

So does a V8 swapped TII with an 8.8 sitting under it.

nofords 08-21-11 09:28 PM

I didn't think $500 for the whole car...but the car you purchase or was given has to be found in classifieds for $500. Parts and accessories not including safety equip or the price of the car is max $2k with receipts.

This way, the v8 and the LT T56 is still in the game...no?

jimeby 08-22-11 10:44 AM

All good ideas here... we just have to pick one and do it. Right now I'm leaning towards putting heavier duty guts in our T5. It's quick and easy and hidden.
For the LeMons the entire build has to be under $500 excluding "safety" mods like brakes, exhaust, cage. So any replacement transmission or dif we put it will be counted in the $500 limit.
