trans sticky?
 

ok...drove my 70 mg midget with 12a bridgey saterday after 456 gear swap,its a beast from dead stop now...no bogg off line from having to high(327)gears !!! but....my 4 speed trans is still hard to shift..or really notchey...smoth between gears an comming out of gears,and no noies from trans...but really have to push hard to shift into gear (all of them) an makes for a slow gear change,as matter of fact if you try an get to quick shifting youll miss 3rd gear every time, now it was pretty dam cold out an when its warmer its not as bad but still notchey. i did shortin my shifter by an inch an angeld it forward for a comfy position but i dont think thats the problem,any advice ????? i do have another trans but ill have to check to see if its a 4 speed or 3 speed and im running a new 6 puck clutch disk (no slipage there!) . when i got the 12a and 2 trans the shifters were out an i picked the best one to modd but other than that they lookd the same...diff maby? really dont want to pull trans if i cna help it cause motor an everthing must come out to do it.also flushd an fild with new trans fluid when installd.

I would look at the clutch not fully disengaging. Something is causing the shift binding and it could be the clutch travel, the linkage could be getting hung up when it's torqued over under load, the throw out bearing could be binding on its sleeve as it could be missing any lube. Could be the pilot bearing seizing up and not letting a speed differential develop between the input shaft and the motor. Could be a number of issues, but I would look at the clutch travel.

clutch an all conecting parts brand new,dosent have any problems releasing and is smooth coming out of gear,has good pedal,it just takes to much pushing to put into gear,no grinding or noises just to much pressure.and its much worse when its colder outside,still does it when warm...just worse when cold. i did notice before i put trans onto motor it seemd kinda notchy as well but chalked it up to not having fluid in it at the time.

Crank car, push in clutch and shift to reverse. Any crunching? If so, clutch is the problem.

Known trans? Change to AmSoil trans fluid.

One solution found in the 2nd gen section is to use half trans oil half ATF with this sort of issue. Your mileage may vary.

no crunching,even when shifting to reverse...was thinking of thiner fluid also,had a similar trans problem in a 70 camero 4 speed years ago.its been like this from begining of build (last year,although not alot of miles) its a 1st gen 4 speed and i think the other trans i got with it is a 3 speed.clutch is a 6 puck and is new along with throwout bering an slave cylender and master,so i dont see a problem there.....especial how hard its driven everytime its started up! think ill change out the fluid next weekend an see if it helps....and if not ill check out the other trans.

Look into a Miata trans up grade. Shifting is Soooooooooooooo much better and better gear ratio.

The temp of the gear oil can affect shifting and for Solo running a lighter viscosity oil might make sense. That said, I have never found it to be a good idea to rush a shift with an RX7gear box. When you do, you'll have missed shifts and wear out the synchros sooner.

Scott is right about lighter oil. However, there must be a certain amount of friction for the sync rings to engage. Running an oil with MSO2 will make shifting horrendous!! In my old Getrag box, I tried several oils including AmSoil engine oil. Shifting was hard!! Finally ended up with ATF and all was well. Don't know if ATF will lubricate enough for the RX7 box, but it will cure worn sync shifting problems.

I've had trouble with my FD trans with different oils especially when cold. The Neo Synthetic has worked best for me all around even in cold...

hows your t/o bearing and pilot bearing..if all is good try atf in the trans
