Tranny oil shoots pass seals?
Ok since i'm at a loss I'm posting this problem on several boards (pls ignore it if you've seen it already)
I came back from my past solo1 event with a slipping clutch. I had thought my clutch was toast, but upon dropping the trans I realized that oil had sprayed out of the front and rear main seal. At first I thought it was a clogged breather on the transmission that lets the hot air that expands out failing. But after dropping the trans and removing the breather it turns out that the breather was fine and it was not clogged. I went ahead and ordered a new one from mazda anyways. So now this is my dilema. What would cause oil to shoot out of hte front and rear main trans seals? The front and rear seals were replaced less than 11,000 kms ago (~7000 mi) and are about 2 years old). I must admit I filled the transmission until oil came out of the fill hole instead of the inspection hole. What happens when you overfill a tranny, where would all the excess oil go? If i had overfilled it two years ago it would have only been over by a very very small amount, as I just pumped oil into the tranny until it dripped out of the fill hole.... and closed the drain plug up. I have never really pushed pushed the car as hard as I have now, but it had attended it's fair share of soloII and spirited driving, so if it would leak it should've leaked earlier right? I guess all bets are off at the race track... So what do I check now? I'm at a loss. I ordered new front and rear seals, new lower cover gasket. New clutch disk and new PP with a nice Al flywheel. I want this problem fixed... Has anyone encounted such a problem? I'm at a loss. |
The first thing I would check after the vent (thanks for covering the basics) is the bearings. If the shafts aren't where they belong the seals are going to have a much harder time keeping the oil in the gearbox.
You don't have a tranny cooler and pump by any chance do you? |
Had this problem.
The vent was plugged. When the trans got hot it would generate pressure internally and blow fluid out the seals. Couldn't figure out why the trans kept leaking until one day I checked fluid level about an hour after running and I found there was a vacuum in the transmission. That was a major clue and a half... |
