Towing race car with A Frame
 

Hay guys,

Has anyone ever fabricated a A frame to tow their race car using its own wheels, alot like the motorhome guys do with their run around car?

Reason I ask is because although my race car is road legal, it goes through a STUPID amount of gas highway driving and I dont have the space to keep a trailer.

Its an FD by the way.

With a removable front bumper, how would be the best way to mount to the car?

I'd be worried about trashing the tires...

It might be worth it in my case......or just use some transport rims and tyres.

Gas wise a trip that I could do in a normal car for $160, cost me $400 in the race car last time I did it...... To get to some of the further away tracks Id be looking at $800 return in gas.

Did it for years with no issues. Both SA and FC. Have a friend towing a FD. Just make sure your front tires are not locked.
I towed mine with a 94 Toyota p-up. Lived 10 miles from the track. Changed the tires at the track most of the time.

Did two 600+ miles trip towing with the A-frame. Once with a 90 Astro van and 02 Toyota 4runner.

The FD guy wired his trailer lights to the FD lights. He has all his running lights working on his car. I only spliced in to the rear lights.

Here's my setup. Sleeper7 and I use an "A" frame tow bar to tow our cars to the track. I have 2 each 1/4" X 2" flat stock bolted to my frame extending forward. The only bad thing about my setup is I had to cut slots in my front end for the bars to pass through. It doesn't look bad at all. I tow my car with a 2003 Toyota Tacoma without any problems. Car is very stable towing at 50 to 55mph. Like Chuck mentioned just leave the steering unlock when towing. I'll post closeup picture if you want.

Thats exactly what Im thinking of making. Any chance of some detailed photos of where it attaches to the car?

i'd love more pictures of the setup too! Cheaper then building a car trailer!

when I first got my Spec RX7, I towed it to the racetrack with a towbar that attached to the two stock front "tow" points. It worked fine; just leave a key in the ignition so the front wheels can turn. And tow on cheapo tires, not your race rubber.

Only two problems:
1. your algnment will ned to be checked more often.
2. If you wreck the car at the track, you may need to rent a trailer to get it home.

Because I had the resources and was trying to learn welding I made myself a tow dolly. Needed to do something hands on says my co worker who is a certified welder. I have plans of making a car trailer next. The tow bar really scares me a bit but I do see RVs on the highway towing vehicles with it all the time.

well i found out that local regulations for most states in australia is that its illegal to tow a car like this unless engineered, and those cars usually have a full chassis.

Also the car needs to have brakes if towed like this.


Easier to make a dolly or a trailor.
