Tow Hook + FMIC?

3 Attachment(s)
i have a HKS Front Mount Intercooler Type S and was wondering if it is possible to make a aftermarket front tow hook work. if so, where? i dont know if it matters but i am looking into the FEED tow hooks. thanks in advance.

here are some shots to give you an idea of what i have to deal with:

let me change my question then, does anyone have a front tow hook?

Mahjik 10-18-06 07:20 PM

I will be adding one over the winter (maybe one in the rear as well), but its not on the car yet.

ZumSpeedRX-7 10-18-06 10:09 PM

i think im gonna have to resort to something custom over the winter. do you have any idea on how you're gonna install it or which hook you're going with?

Mahjik 10-18-06 10:47 PM

I haven't looked yet as to where it will go. However, since I'm running a SMIC, I won't have the same worries as you. ;) Here's what I'll probably end up using:

hmmm what about one ontop like the Team Orange Sube. Can someone say engine dampener kit?http://www.scoobyblog.com/wp-content...2006/02/01.jpg

Personally, I don't like the thought of a tow chain coming across my hood (in the event I need tow at the track). ;) That and I also don't want to cut up a hood. :)

ZumSpeedRX-7 10-19-06 11:11 AM

the last thing i want after going off the track and needing a tow is to have a)my front bumper and FMIC damaged or b)my hood getting damaged. unless someone is holding the chain while the slack is getting tightened, that hood is gonna get damaged. plus i dont want to cut into my hood. thanks for the idea though.

mahjik-thats a good looking tow hook. do they have a price for it?

They used to... I'll email them tonight to check on a price. OBX also has a hook as well. Most of the ones that I have seen range from $50-$100 or so.

I recently saw someone's FD that had a tow hook thing welded up to the strut brace bar where it connected to the shock tower. I think that plate was reinforced also.

It looks like your only option is to play off of your stock tow point. Have it come down a bit, then out. Or something like that. Ill get under my car tommorow and take a look.

+1 to Aqua Teen Hunger Force guy ("Hahaha. Oh ... nothing ... it's just you ... with your 3 dimensions ...).

You should be able to fab a tow hook and powder coat it (caliper paint works too ;) )

Get some quick release pins (http://www.pivotpins.com/catalog/catidx.html) s.t. you can remove it, toss it in your trunk, when you just want to cruise and pop it on when you're at the track.

Only problem I can think of is the thing pivoting on the factory hook and cleaving through into your front bumper :Kill1:

They dont use chains @ the track. I dont think any of you have seen how they tow the cars, its not with a chain, but the nylon rope or strap...

Dr4900n 10-20-06 12:12 PM

The races I go to, they usually push the cars off the track with the tow trucks.

Gotta love the dirt races :icon16:

ZumSpeedRX-7 10-20-06 12:31 PM

thanks guys. i think i am resorting to something custom. im not sure if im gonna buy a pre-fabed tow hook, or have one custom made. but im gonna get one on there either way. i have been fortunate enough so far, not to have to need a tow, so i didnt know exactly what they used to tow cars off the tracks.

I have front tow hook on my ITs car. I just took a sheet of steel and went to town with it..made it in an hour or so at home, and bolted it to the bumper itself under the nose.

If you need to work around the FMIC I would get something done like that...Ill post some pics if you like. let me know

Please do. I'm in the same predicament with a large FMIC and it's either cut through a custom bumper for tow hook access, go through the hood, etc.

yes, please do. how thick of steel did you have to use?

Here are a few pics of the tow hook I made...Its probably not gonna be directlly applicable, since its on an FC ITS car, but nontheless the idea should help..

I'm looking for a tow hook solution too. These cables look interesting. Anyone know how they mount?

The first RX-8 looks cool.

tow hooks are soooooo easy to make its retarted. just get a 1/4th inch piece of steel. drill 3 holes or whatvere. drill one big hole, and attach it to the frame. that subie that has it on the hood like that is incase of a role over i believe. correct me if im wrong.

Dr4900n 10-25-06 03:34 PM

They're probably just kryponite cables linked up to some stable part of the car. You can get them at most hardware stores. I'd get the ones coated with plastic ... I doubt anyone wants thier paint scratched by thier tow hook.
