Tires for Autocross
 

I'm looking into buying some tires within the next few months (still aways from actually buying), and I need some ideas.

The tires will be an autocross only tire, as I have another set of tires just for the street on my stock 1991 rims. The auto-x tires will be mounted on stock 15x6 1989-90 GXL wheels.

I'm looking for a DOT legal tire. I might be leaning towards Kumhos, but if enough people say there is something better, then that's what I'll try. Advice on sizes, brands, etc, would be most appreciated. :)

All out speed: Hoosier AS303
All out longevity: Toyo Proxes RA-1
Combination: Kumho V700

Buy the Kumhos. The Hoosiers are said to be a bit faster but less forgiving. The kumhos are also said to last a bit longer.

If it's grip that you want, then go with the Hoosiers. Only bad side is that the Hoosiers are not so nice in the rain. If you want a comparably grippy tire (but not as good as the AS303) with rain effectiveness, then go with the Kumho's. If you're worried about tread-wear, then the Toyo's. Then again, if you're worried about tread-wear, why would you buy race tires?

I'll give you the same info as everyone else...

The Hoosiers are the fastest. They will gain you a few tenths on each run if you realy need it and wantto be that compeditive.

The kuhmos will be a few tenths slower. BUT they cost about 2/3rds as much, and last about twice as long... A much better choice unless you are gunning for a national trophy or something, but since you are asking these questions to us... I'm going to go ahead and assume that's not the case :)

So, I'm leaning towards either Kumhos or a bunch of FC list people have mentioned the Falken Azenis. Anyone here have any experience? Heard they were a great dry tire, pretty scary in the wet.

Hoosiers are not that fastest race tires. There right up there though...You gotta get the New Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. There a race only tire like the Hoosier and V-700 Kumho's.... There alot of money but there fabulous.

BTW: the Falken Azenis are not that great, however the Falken FK 451's are an awesome street tire. Probably the best street tire for the money.

Awesome tire and great handling. I have them on my street FC and my neighbor with a '94 911 bone stock aside from exhaust/K&N runs them. He beat 90% of the field at a local Porsche AutoX here in SF. Most guys were running Kumhos or the Hoosiers also!

The factory 15x6" size rim is kind of small. 15x7 or 15x8 would be much better and allow 225/15's all the way around.

One other thought ... I run on BFG g-Force KDW's in street tire class and I'm very satisfied with their performance. If the BFG g-Force R-1 is the race version of the tires I have, then they definitely have my vote. :)

Jury's still out on the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. Hoosiers are still the lightest, stickiest road race tires available for the sports car racer...

Porsche club racers and SCCA racers pretty much run on Hoosiers...I think I saw a Dunlop trailer at a PCA race once, but they weren't as busy as the Hoosier trailer...

Hi Paul, they are not DOT legal.

And to the other guy, hey Hoosiers rock, no doubt, I'm just saying there not the only tire and perhaps not the best...they sure don't last very long, but for the money are still the best.....Steve Obelene runs Hoosier's on his 88 TII and he is the National champ last year at Topeka Nationals in BP so they odviously work real good.......

I have heard good things about the Falken Azenis. Cheap and great grip. I have the S03's and like them. They are just expensive is all.

Then it doesn't do us much good bud.. I mean, I can get Goodyear Eagle slicks for crying out loud, way way way faster than Hoosiers, but if I'm stuck with DOT, Hoosier is the game in town.
