Nice video Niles! I saw you won both days. Congrats!

gracer7-rx7 08-23-11 11:28 PM

'bout time you guys posted some video. :)

Here is my short SM race where I damaged the car spinning in T5 :(
Bent front subframe, bent LCA, bent UCA and bent wheel...

You guys going to Infineon?

I wish I had video, and I wish I had video with a camera in the same sort-of location. You appear to turn-in much earlier than I do for almost every corner, and also hold a much tighter line T2 and T3/T4. Mind you I'm in my 3400# C6 but it's still interesting to see...

what can i say..... even straight line in the rx-7 is more exciting than the Miata spin. I like the little oversteer action at the top of the hill (T9). You clobbered that Mustang on the exit of 5 -- nice. BTW, what's the deal with short-shifting behind him and also into T14?

Niles,
As always good stuff. Loved the big slide at the top of the hill

Thanks for sharing and good luck with the rest of the season :icon_tup:

Still adjusting to my motor and tuning. I've got a partital throttle hesistation which leads to the turbo coming on like a hammer after that. You see that at turn 9. I've also slowed my entry up a bit to most turns to carry RPMs above the stumble at apex.

Short shifting behind the mustang? Not sure....I'll have to watch again. I wasn't pressured at this point from behind.

It definitely is. Things happen so much slower in the Miata compared the FD. T2 seems to take forever in the Miata while Niles is through it in the blink of an eye. :)

Niles had a good weekend at this event. He quickly found a consistent, fast pace even after being out of competition since last Fall! I had hoped to get myself up there and dice with Niles but was not up to his pace. Fortunately I'll have another chance at the season finale!

I think you're referring to the 2nd to 3rd shift when coming down the hill at the exit of 5a. It's really easy to get wheel spin if you gas it too hard there. This is roughly the same speed and shifting sequence used in these cars as you enter the top of the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca.

We typically enter T14 in 3rd gear (as you can see and hear in Niles' video). It's easy to over slow the car on entry if you are trying to enter in 2nd gear. Also at WOT in 2nd gear things happen really fast and it's easy to lose the rear of the car. Just seems easier and more predictable to "lug" the motor for a second or two in 3rd gear. The main objective at T14 is to set up the launch down the straight, any mistake entering T14 will greatly effect the lap time.

As Alberto mentioned, there is quite a difference in driving these cars (he owns both). Alberto was gracious enough to allow me to borrow and race his Miata at the last Laguna event when I broke my transmission. It's true things happen a little slower in the Miata, but if you want to run fast lap times you had better be precise and be ready to corner at the cars limit! Valuable lessons can be (re-)learned when driving a momentum car.

Alberto - have you been able to make repairs? I haven't seen you name on the entry list for the Infineon event...

Repairs are made. Need to get the car aligned. Haven't registered yet as there is a lot of family stuff going on and want to make sure I can afford it.

I did. First time there in the Miata. I have only been there once before 3 years ago in the FD. Scary f'in track especially with my 25 heat cycle RA1s. I was struggling the whole time and when the leaders caught me and passed me in the Esses and then I watched my friend go off in T10, I decided that "discretion was the better part of valor" and decided to take myself out of the race so shit wouldn't happen. It cost me $700 to fix the car after the Thill incident and I didn't want to repeat that...

Toyos last a long time. Meaning they suck a long time before you get new ones that suck. But rules are rules. Treadwear 100 and no less, right?

Were you in the SM or IT group?

088 09-07-11 10:24 PM

Got nearly 7 track days / race days from the Toyo R888s. They gradually lost grip until one of the fronts wore down to the cord. It finally gave up the ghost this morning at T-Hill during the third session. Just one of several factors that put an end to my day.

Possibly trying BF Goodrich g-Force R1 next.....

gracer7-rx7 09-07-11 11:30 PM

I don't have an issue with the Toyos. They fit the ticket. I was in SM.
