Thinking about goin to a local autocross for fun.

Like I said Im thinking about going ot a local autocross that I seen before when I was taking my motorcycle class. Anyways its a little intimidating because there is alot of older guys that have audi R8's and countless corvettes and a few vipers. I think it would be a little embarissing the cruise out there in my tiny 1st gen 7 mostly stock only has the interiour removed and smokes at higher rpms. I also belive I would definatly have to fix my oil leak before I they would let me out on thier track.

Well I guess what Im getting at is that I dont know how to go about starting eather. When it comes to being on the street I know how to handle my car and I pratice the heel toe and double clutching on my down shifts.

And what rubbers would work good for DD tires and maybe decent track tires?

Forget those guys! Your car can be just as quick as theres can its all in the driver my man! Why there worried about taping up the entire front end with painters tape and trying not to nick a cone you could be out there blasting around the course. As long as your car isnt dripping oil while its running just clean it up really good. I really like kuhmos as a DD autox tire because they have reasonable grip and are pretty cheap in price. Who cares what people think get out there and have fun!

Ya I hear yeh thanks for the support. I was thinking the same thing, I just know that the cars they have were built for handleing and speed. I am starting to work on the oil leak this weekend. I should be able to head out to the autocross in probably 2 weeks.

Just go and have some fun. I always do terribly but its still fun.

Just do it! When I lived in MD I use to go and autox the FB with the porsche club. I was either whooping up on $100,000 cars are running right with them with my $500 FB. I got the crazy stares until my car outperformed theirs. Kind of feel good having Porche guys circle your car to take a look under the hood and suspension to make sure you did not cheat. Priceless!

Well I will definatly head out there. Now I dont believe that every place is the same but maybe thier close when it comes to rules. How do you cheat? lol I figured as long as you had a car and got out there you were good.

They just could not swallow that they was getting beat up on by a primer spotted FB so they automatically judge me as cheating. I took it as a joke but it was cool. Enough about me you just go out there have fun.

Ya so I was talking to a guy at my school today that has a evo, he said the entrence fee to the autcross around here is $150 thats alot of money I cant afford that if its true. Is that average? and if that is average then is there maybe some advice as to how I might be able to start a more affordable on?

wrankin 09-16-09 01:40 PM

$150?!!!! Maybe for a weekend school. Certainly not for a competition. Normal prices around here are around $25 or so for 4-6 runs. When we ran a full day school a couple years ago, I keep thinking it was $50 for the day, and all the course time you could handle.

$150 sounds like a day at an HPDE - was he talking about the track or cone dodging in a parking lot?

I know the club I compete with the cost is 30.00 for non-members and 25.00 for members.

Yeah, just get your car good enough to pass tech inspection and get your ass out there.
It will be a learning experience, for sure. Start now, rather than trying to wait until your car is "perfect". That way you can improve on your car while improving the driver at the same time. I think it works out better if the driver and the car improve at the same rate.

Go to the SCCA website and read up on autocross. You can also check out the videos listed in my signature for a little more insight into what it's all about.

Good luck man! :)

Im doing some big time looking into it now. One question I have tried to as several times but never got an answer (so Im just getting money toughther to get a new carb) but my car smoke at high rpms I would think that that means that my apex seals are getting weak. But Iv been told that since rotarys are kinda like 2 strokes it could be some o-rings in my carb that are bad. Anyways my car jearks at low rpms and smokes at high And if i just give it gas at idle it sounds like it floods out... and dies.

catch-22 09-16-09 04:12 PM

Dont always assume its the apex seals just because theres smoke. First what color is the smoke blue, black, or white?

rx-7_cbr929 09-16-09 06:06 PM

Well the smoke is white originally coming out of the exhaust (which is the coolent color) but then as it fades a little bit you see the blue (which is oil color) I originally put a real light oil like 5w40 i think in it cause i had to do a motor swap and it would smoke out the entire block then after running that a little bit i drained all of it and put heaver in it i wana say 15w40. After that it slowed down ALOT and just got better now its only when i start it up after its sat for maybe 3+ hours and every single morning when I fire it up. In the morning it dosnt smoke till its warm it just smokes till I start to move the car. I can drive it down the road it will still be cold but its not smoking.
