Suspension (S5 TII) ??
 

Hello,

I have a 1989 TII with a stock suspension. I just got back into AutoX and have raced 4 races this car (SM2 class). I am pretty happy with the power aspect of my car, but feel like a pig in the corners. I would love to get a reccommendation on a decent setup for my car (Reasonably priced). I have looked around and saw a few used coilovers (Used MazdaSpeed set for $700), but no idea what is best for AutoX.

Car:
Motor (Stock Port) - About 50,000 miles on the motor
Upgraded turbo (BNR Stage #1)
Stocck 550's Primaries
Greddy 720's Secondaries
SAFCII
Racing Beat full exhaust
3 Inch Turbo inlet duct (K&N Cone)
Racing Beat FCD
Magnecor wires
Stainless Brake and Clutch lines
Junk tires for AutoX (Kumho 712's W rated)

How serious do you want to get?
I would go for a set of KYB AGX's or Koni Yellows for upgrade dampers first.
If you still have a little more left over, any aftermarket *linear* spring set will work.

I've heard good things about the MS setup although they do use progressive springs which is interesting. Im using JIC FLTA2s which have been great on the track so far. I know you said you're looking for reasonably priced but maybe check out JRZ's offerings as well.

I can get a brand new set of Eiback Pro springs reasonably, but they are progressive. Is progressive bad doing AutoX?

If you can drive with the progressive rate, they will work.
I had a set, and I personally hated them.

It's highly dependent on the driver.
I couldn't adjust to the progressive nature of the springs.
I've heard some others that had no trouble.

Just noticed that you always have nice looking Asian women as your avatar (Yes just joking)

There is a guy (87GTR) selling a set of MazdaSpeed Coilovers that look nice, but I can't find anything on them (Good/bad/positives/nagatives). I really wish I had the money there are some awsome sounding coilovers ($3K) that not only adjust the spring rate, but the car height as well. Maybe later in some other pipe dream.

If you keep your eyes peeled you can pikcup new or like-new coilovers like Tein Flex or JIC's or others for pretty cheap here on the board.

save up the money, and watch the boards daily for a good deal. When the deal comes around, jump on it.

I've got a set of Tein HR's on my fc, the car feels worlds better than it did stock.

I run mazdaspeed coilovers.. You'll still need to get shock/struts for them (unless he's selling them with the Koni's Mazdaspeed usually sells them with).

Works great for the track, the rates I run would be totally unstreetable (well, that and delrin bushings and spherical bearings)

Could be a fine deal, good guy, and a fair price if they are complete. this means, as Paul asked, do the come with housings, springs, and hats? If so, the Koni inserts are both durable and good performers. List the spring rates he is offering, and we'll comment some more. If they are the "standard "springs supplied with the kit, they are fine for a dual use(street/AX) car, if he has gone to higher rates, they may not be very pleasant on the street. Carl

It sounds as if both of my 2nd Gens are sold and I just picked up a rough 3rd gen. This car will take some work and AutoX will be questionable this year (Just getting it streetable is going to take a few grand).

save your money and get some zeal/endless coilovers.

I have MazdaSpeed coilovers on mine. Front springs are 500lb, rears 600lbs. Have just had to replace the inserts in the front - had Koni adjustables built in. Rear springs are too hard - want to replace with 425-450lb ones.

Is real firm on the road - don't get to the track for another 4 weeks then will hopefully see great improvement over the stock susp I had before!

The guys here were racing S4's with KYB shocks and 475lb front and 425lb rear springs - sinple (but non adjustable) setup that seemed to work. See www.mazdapro7racing.co.nz and look up Pro7plus stuff.

Obviously coilovers will always be better.

how are your guys cars handling (with coilovers ) around corners with slight bumps or uneven surface? like on street for example? does your car jump a lot feeling like it's about to let go traction?
