Street tires for autox and track
I'm going to be running my 93 R1 at a few autox's and track days this summer and I want a good street tire (we have a dedicated Street Tire Class in our region with a treadwear of 140 or higher) I can drive to the track and then run all day and drive home.
Which, of the current crop of brands, do you like in a 225/50/16 Z size? Bridgestone Pole Positions, Hankooks, Falkens, Toyos; any recomendaions based on what you've used or are using? |
I would go with the Falken Azenis RT-615 .
|
The hot tire in the street tire war right now is the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....Potenza+RE-01R
The Hankook RS-2s and Falken Azenis RT-615s are a very close option also. You can also go up to a 245/45/16 with out any problems on an FD w/ stock rims and suspension. |
Falken RT-615 works great, and it is cheap.
|
Amazing grip, and inexpensive. |
I have heard good things about the Azeni's as well and plan on picking a set up before my next track day.
Just wish they made them in a 245/45/16. |
I just bought some Azenis RT-615 for my street FC that I take to random autoX and hopefully some track days soon. I'm going to an autoX tommorrow so i'll see how they really are. The Azenis are great bang for your buck tires.

I just did my first autocross of the season on my new RT615, dollar for dollar, probably the best tire money you will spend., No they dont make them in a 16 size, We are running 17's on my fb, tight fit though. They do take a couple laps to warm up to a nice sticky and grippy goo. Then the fun begins!
|
Just keep in mind that they are not the best tire for the rain, so this is strictly a summer tire...

I would imagine you would have no problem what so ever. You should be able to go even wider if you wanted to.
I have also seen someone squeeze the 265/45/16s on an FD with stock rims in Super Stock Auto X class. So he probably had stock style Konis at best and maybe 1/4" spacers. |
I've got some 225/50/16 Hankook RS2's I'll sell ya :D Bout 500 miles on them MAX
