Strange Noise in Trans after Fluid Change
 

My 93 FD single turbo would not shift into fourth gear when it got hot during Track Days. The advice I received was to change the trans fluid. I put in Idemitsu synthetic trans fluid, now cars make a very strange growling sound from the trans when it is cold (sounds like lots of bad bearings or maybe a bad throwout bearing). This noise goes away when it is hot. Trans is hard to get into reverse when I come off the track hot. Any ideas?

yes, better put the old oil back in quickly. lol

Check the plastic bushing on the end of the shifter in the metal top box. Running the tranny hot before, a bearing may now be spinning in the case. when hot it wont spin due to expansion.

Ok, thanks. I did actually try putting in conventional trans fluid, but the same noise persists. The noise is actually the worst when the car if first started, and then it is less noisy (but still noisy) when the trans is warmed up from street driving. BTW, I was just in Nanaimo two weeks ago.

Does the noise go away when clutch is down? How about with clutch down and in gear?

Noise goes away when the clutch is down whether it is in neutral or in gear. When clutch is down, the engine is not spinning the gears and shafts in the trans, which is why I am thinking it is a bearing or something else in the trans.

Usually it is the input shaft bearing. I have forgotten how to check that now. Might want to look up on google. In either case the transmission will need to come out to have that fixed. I would say it wasn't really the oil that caused it. Most likely just the timing happens to be the same.
