Steering Quickener?
 

has anyone try this for a race car?
it makes you turn less the steering wheel to go around corners.
comes in two versions 30% and 50%

You realize you need to retrofit an entirely new rack to get the steering "box" to fit?
That thing does not drop into the stock RX-7 steering rack.
So you're looking at major custom work no matter what.

Why do you want to do such a thing?
Why not go with a smaller diameter steering wheel?

It does not drop into the rack, it merely installs in the steering column shaft between the steering wheel and the rack. The steering shaft is cut somewhere and this device installed. It just gears up the steering wheel input in order to quicken the steering at the rack.

Of course if someone wanted they could install it backwards and make the steering slower instead. Might be good for land speed record guys :p:

Steering Quickner
 

Biggest problem with a quickner, is it makes it MUCH harder to steer the car at low speeds. Power steering is a MUST, and most race cars over 1000lbs useing one, have power steering. They do work great. Coleman Racing has a very nice, compack, unit for the same price. Go for it!

To me a high speed turn on a road course is around 100 mph. These turns are not tight, and only require turning the steering wheel a very small amount. You do not need a steering quickener for high speed turns. Even the tight 45 mph turns on a road race course only require about 1/2 turn of my stock steering box.

To me the only thing that steering quickener would be good for would be dirt trackin', maybe autocross, and drifting.

Steering quickeners are a bad idea for a street driver. Since they come in 1to1:50 and 2to 1, it would make the car to twitchy on the rough highways. We use them in Stock cars on the dirt, where we are constantly drifting through the turns. Best bet would be to buy a race style rack and pinion and adapt it over, there you can select a little better ratio. Might work great if you are building a purpose built drifting car!

FYI for a semi-old thread. My friend bought one of these for his Mustang (2:1 for street, the guy is crazy). They are small and way lighter than I expected. There are also designed to be easily serviceable; a few small bolts and you have full access to the internal gears. Rebuild kits are necessary as well. For sale right now: $105! I'm gonna get one for my drift car

there great they use them on the rally cars aswell.

is power steering really neccasary if u have on though?

If you put in a 2:1 quickener, then your steering wheel will be twice as hard to turn
