starting auto x, few questions
 

I want to start attending auto x's around summer time. I have a 86 base n/a, below is a list of mods I have done or am going to do.

5 lug swap with s5 gxl wheels, brakes, new pads
Tokico blue struts (kind of wish I had gotten the illumina's now, but they were too much at the time)
Eibach springs (going to order soon)
Megasquirt fuel n' spark stand alone
CAI
RB header
RB pre silencer
RB steel lightweight flywheel

I am rebuilding a s5 n/a block with a streetport.

The tokico struts are BRAND new, I have only opened the boxes to inspect them. Should I sell them and buy the adjustable illumina's? It is still a DD so it would be nice to be able to set them stiff for auto x then soften them up for the street.

Im thinking about eventually buying wider wheels, and some nice race tires for auto x only. Then swap the stockers back when I leave.

Because of the ecu and porting I would have to run Street Prepared correct?

Street Prepared is for stock internal motors only

StreetPort and MegaSquirt bumps up to EPrepared.
Don't know about the 5 lug swap, think it's still EP since they came off GXL model.

Sell blues for Illuminas, more adjustability the better.

You should also get stiffer sway bars if your class allows.

SM2 - street modified 2. Minimum weights and full interiors from the driver/passenger seat forward, not substitute window material.

So should I just not use a megasquirt, to put me in a lower class? If I did that, I could take the money I save from not buying the megasquirt, skip the struts and get some coilovers.

take a look at the rule book and you'll answer your own question.

if you want to be competitive and win, pick a class and mod your car accordingly. then learn to lay down consistent quick lap times. or just have fun with whatever setup you have and learn. once you want to compete for something other than your own personal best time, mod the car or buy a car for the rules/class you want to compete in.

I downloaded the 2006 rulebook.

Under touring it says..
"Electronic components may be installed in-line between an
engine’s sensors and ECU. These components may alter the
signal coming from the sensor in order to affect the ECU’s
operation of engine management system. Example: fuel
controllers that modify the signal coming from an airflow
sensor."
Thats refering to something like a safc correct?

And for street prepared
"Alternate computer control modules may be used whenever an
equivalent change to the conventional system is allowed. For
example, alternate computer module control of ignition settings
or fuel injection is allowed."

So that means the megasquirt is legal?

Sorry for all the stupid questions. I was already planning on building the car up some, so I might as well build it according to a class.

Megasquirt is legal for Strett Prepared....Porting of any type is not. If you have a ported engine already you are beyond the rules allowances. The 5-Lug swap may give you trouble also. It is not something that was available from the factory on your exact car and trim level at the date of manufacture. To update or backdate from one trim level to another you would need to basically swap out absolutely everything that is different on the other trim level.

My mods allow me to be in SP, but touching the motor or turbos will put you in SM. Some porting is allowed in SP. Check the rules.

You can port TB, UIM, and LIM but no further into the engine (street port).
Megasquirt and 5 lug swap are fine for CSP.
You do not want to go to SM2 or FP unless you have $ (and a better platform).

I do not know what your goal is....

The RX7 in CSP is a dead horse...the Miata pretty much own the class at all levels.

SM2...forget it. The Corvette Z06s, RX7 3rd gens (McKee's) etc rule there.

FP is very tough with the 240z and the E36-M3s. You might be able to build a 2nd gen with fully prepped renesis and be competitive. I do not think anyone has done that project yet. You are talking big bucks... You will need at least a bridgeport or peripherial port.

Doesn't leave much except if you want just to show up run and have fun....which is a very valid reason to auto-x. Just make sure you know what your goal is before you spend the $$$

Just run whatever class you fit into. Classing won't matter until you have a lot of experience.

PS your car as is must run in Prepared or Street Mod. Street Prepared only allows porting within 1" of the manifold interface. Any ported rotary violates that.

Seat time will be your best upgrade.

Start using street tires and once you learn your car, then try race tires.
