So who's fast in NorCal? Any road race video BW, T'Hill, Infineon etc

Curious, anyone on here road race, or Track their 7 at T'hill/ Infineon? What do you drive, what sort of events are you currently participating in, when are you goin next? Are you fast? I am justn loking for fellow rotarheads to pal around with at the races, i will be at T'Hill, and Infineon alot, with occasional trips to Willow Springs, Button Willow, Laguna, and Pahrump

On a seperate topic who's fast at Laguna, BW, and Willow Springs? Any in car video? I am looking for any hot laps particularly at BW on configuration 13. Any links appreciated. Sort of cheap driving coach approach.

Who is going to be at Mazfest?

Thanks, Carl Byck

Raced at Thunderhill last December in the 25 hour. Got 7 hours in Evil Genius Racing's 1st gen Rx-7. Had a blast, met some nice people, got to race in the dark, froze, sweat, replaced most of what can be replaced within 12 hours before the race, etc. Really had a good time, and REALLY learned a lot about Thunderhill in one day (plus 1 hour!). I run the rest of my schedule in my 1st gen EP car with ICSCC up here in the Northwest at Portland, Pacific, Mission, and Spokane.

NasaPro7 04-14-05 10:37 PM

We race Pro7 NASA and SCCA in Norcal, and Socal. We are based in Norcal...
We are not fast, but we like to think we are :) (Okay, we are at the back, but we have a blast doing it.) We are also easy to spot; red/white/blue #67. (see avatar)
http://www.miller-motorsports.com
The motor is out right now, but we are planning on returning at the may 14/15 NASA event @ thill.

Bos- I was talking to John Pagel about the 25 hour at the NASA race in Buttonwillow last weekend. Your name is still on the side of the car... you comin down again this year?

I will be at BW on the 7th, if I am not divorced, I'll try to have my car at T'hill on the 13-14 for testing in group 4 only, not ready to race, as the car will be on the track for only the second time in its new configuration. I also hope to spend some time at the 25 hour, but I do not intend to try to complete it particularly. I may build a beater just for that race, but i am not putting my baby on that track, at least not if it's raining. Someday we should put 100 Miatas in a 100 yard square fenced area(cage fight:D), and let them fight it out until no body panel is left unscathed;) Those guys just don't seem to catre, parts are so cheap for them they play chicken with the rest iof the field:(.....

With great trepidation, and effort, YES :D I had to beg my way in(I was late to register). i am flying guitar junkie up to tune in two weeks. It's an All out effort from now til then, Bring your dirtiest clothes, and lets get cracking. Are you running, or showing? If you have time to help, LMK, I can certainly use it. I am sure you have your own work to do, but it does not hurt to ask:D regards, Carl

Marcus -

Apart from some pretty serious thrashing to get the car ready the night before, I've never had more fun in a race car than the 25 hour. The team aspect of endurance racing really appeals to me, and considering how little development time we had with the team and the car, it could hardly have turned out better. One way or another I intend to be there again this year. A group of us are hard at work helping set up an endurance series up here too since we enjoyed it so much. It would be hard to find a better value than the ride we had with John - you make sure and say Hi to him from me if you see him!

That's great to hear! I'm working on trying to put together a deal to run this year, but not sure its going to happen. Trying to race and save for house simply don't work together.

ITS FC So-Cal/Nor Cal racer

I run an FC in ITS in So Cal and Nor Cal SCCA and NASA. Car is #78 White with green graphics.
Last race was at Laguna Seca 4/4/05 with SFR SCCA. Started on the outside pole, lead race twice for 9 laps and finished second. Driver error was my undoing on the last lap at turn 2. There was 4 lead changes for 2 cars. Steve Borlik won the race in another FC ITS. We were nose to tail for most of the race and it was a great time. I had the fastest lap of race with a 1:47.5. Slow compared to the track record of 1:44.5 by Randy Evans who is now driving a SM. But good enough to compete for the top spot. This was with a 5:12 rear ratio.
On March 19-20 I raced at Buttonwillow with So Cal SCCA in a double regional. Finished 4th on Saturday in ITS, 3rd on Sunday in ITS and 2nd in RS on Sunday.
This was with a 4:10 welded rear axle ratio that definetly handicapped the car. I was only able to reach 7000 RPM at the end of the longest straight.
I may not be the fastest guy, but I am having a great time.

Rick W. has a ton of in car at most of those.I got a copy of Harriet in its last Trans Am at Laguna. We made some of Sears point together.

Funs what it is about. BW looks like it is a little lacking in the landmark department. We'll see if I get the car done. Here's a link to my project; http://www.teamfc3s.org/forum/member...tos&car_id=562

Buzzin 04-25-05 12:00 AM

Carl that car is incredible!!!!
Ya BW is flat with two man made hills, very safe track. You have to make a huge mistake to hit any thing there, but it still happens.

alwan16 does a lot of racing in Nor Cal. I know he autocrosses. Don't know about road racing. He's fairly fast in his 3rd gen in ASP.

pedalpusher 05-03-05 12:10 PM

I've run at Thunderhill a couple times, but I'm only a novice. Looking forward to doing some more track time there, but last time I was out the turbos stopped turboing. My garage is getting closer to being finished, so I should be digging into the RX-7 in a bit. It's always nice to see fellow RX-7 owners at the track. Last time I was out, I hitched a ride with a guy named Niles, who I think is (was?) here on the forums. My girlfriend took a ride with him, too. When she got off the track she got out of the car, took off the helmet and said "That's the scariest f***in' thing I've done in my life". I think he ran a 2:08 with me in the car. I believe he said his fastest was a 2:04. That was the full track, CCW, without the bypass at T5.

Hey Rob.....yep that's me.....got it down to a 2:04.3......Get your turbos fixed? Sold that car to a freind. I'm heading up to THill next wednesday. New car.......first time at Thill. Hoping to get near 2:00 flat. We will see.
Needs a bit of sorting.

Carl Byck 05-03-05 10:59 PM

Niles, what is the new car? My Turbo blew on the dyno saturday, brand new.... I was hoping to be at BW this weekend, and T'hill 14-15, but thats off now:(. Anyway, my best in a 300whp Fc with basic mods was 2:06. When the car hits the track next it will be sporting 13" slicks, Advanced design/AWR suspension, and ~425whp. Should be a kick in the a$$ if I ever get it running LOL. Anyway, Gimme a call some time 707-696-2705. Carl

For that matter anyone who tracks their car in NorCal look me up.:)

NasaPro7 05-03-05 11:02 PM

We'll be out at Thunderhill with NASA the 14th/15th running HPDE on Saturday to break in the new motor, and we may race Sunday... I haven't been in the car since November...

Marcus

gnx7 05-04-05 01:54 AM

I hope to be at Thunderhill on the 15th also for HPDE.

rotoober 05-04-05 10:22 AM

See you guys out there - I've only tracked there once - hp driving school - found out I'm not the fastest driver in the world, but learned tons. Hopefully I'll get to go at least 3X this summer! I'd be stupid not to, only live 20 minutes from the track. If any of you need some help, let me know, I'm a half-way decent wrench turner. Anybody have temp problems out there in the summer? I've got a 3rd gen. w/stock turbos @ 300rwhp stock cooling system manual fan mods. In January, no problem but it was only 70.

Matt

SHPNOUT 05-04-05 10:26 AM

Hey Carl.......The "new" car is Pettit's old World Challenge/USSRC/Daytona 24hr car. Well engineered, very used. Picked it up from a guy in Florida a few months ago. Had it at Laguna and Sears. Still trying to sort it out. This car has a very different feel then my R-1. Much stiffer......cage and seam welded, no power steering etc.....Full race. and LOUD.....made 114db at Sears. :-)

Carl Byck 05-04-05 11:24 AM

DigDugs car? Cool:D I remember when Petit ran that against M2 at Sears years ago when M2 debuted their Blue car, followed by a second car. The guy that built the first M2 car was Mike Johnson, that's where my FC came from, it was his customers car. The second M2 car was finished up with the help of APXL8T on this forum. We need to get a group together, that would be some of those guys(Mike's not available), but Brian Richards, Rick Weldon etc, for a road race reunion. All the guys are still around, and most are still active in racing in one way shape or form.
Mark, I will have to try and make the 15th with all you guys coming out. Who is going what days exactly? Maybe I can get ny car togeher with a little turbo I have sitting on my shelf? I'kll have to see if Dave from OS design is available for a rough conservative tune on my car... Unlikely I'll get it done, but maybe my Supra will be back from the paint shop by then... I hate to miss this. Maybe since i am technically an instructor I can set something up. We'll see.

Nope, other projects and committments have kept me from working on my car. One of the projects was rewiring my (detached) garage to turn it into a shop :) It goes through inspection next week, then I can get the drywall up and get the air connected, then maybe I can turn some wrenches :) I still don't know what the problem is, but if I need to buy new turbos I'm thinking about going with the new BNRs. I'm jonesin' to get back out on the track. I do a lot of sim racing as a kind of "methadone" treatment, but Ronda's not going to be happy if I join yet another league. She loved the real track, on the other hand :) Thanks again for the ride(s) at the track.

Carl... sorry you couldn't make the MazdaFest at Buttonwillow. It was a blast. There was no timing at the event and I don't have a hotlap so I have no idea how fast I ran but the car did feel really good. It was only my second event with the Advance Design shocks and stiffer springs on my FD. Made the car feel GREAT at the track.

Back when the car had stock suspension I did get some times at Laguna Seca and Spring Mountain at events with transponder rentals available. My best times were 1:47 for Laguna Seca (with traffic to pass) and 1:52 for Spring Mountain (no traffic). I honestly don't know if those times are any good for an FD or not as I'm just a time trialer and I'm usually one of the few FDs at any event.

Rotoober:

I don't know if you'll have engine temperature problems or not. It depends on your car and how hard you drive it. I found that I would get too hot with the stock car after a few laps even on 70 degree days. A combination of careful modifications solved this problem for me. If you want to know what worked for me just PM me but it's nothing that hasn't been posted about before. In the meantime ust keep a close eye on your temps! Personally I avoid summer events in most inland parts of California.
