So, continuing.. What brake pads are you using?
 

Specify auto-x vs roadracing, 1st, 2nd or 3rd gen.. Any issues?

I'm roadracing, ran 4 20minute sessions on a set of Carbotech Panther Plus pads, 2nd gen.. Couldn't be happier, brakes never ever went away, brakes were hard as a rock through all sessions, and just looked over the pads, tons of life left. Rotors look good, no scoring or heat checking..

Autox only: Hawk HP+

Also daily drive on them and like them though they do dust and squeak; mandatory wheel scrubbing every weekend. So far I have no rotor issues after about 20,000 miles and 20 or so autox events.

My first time on a roadcourse will be this weekend; we'll see what I think then.

Hawk is the way to go. Most of the IT community use them and swear by them. I have used PFC and Hawk both on my AS Mustang and prefer the Hawks. Great bite, no fade, and maybe a touch hard on the rotos, but with the price of pads nowadays, it's the rotors that are the disposable item, not the pads!

Auto-x, 3rd gen: Hawk HP+'s

I really like how sharp the braking is. I can go deep into corners and completely shutdown without locking up the tires. But, they do dust a crapload. After an event, it will look like a month's worth of normal pad dusting.

My friend's got them on his Camaro and he road races from time to time. He says that they do fade; but, they're still way better than non-performance brake pads even when they're fading. I'll probably give road racing a try next season ... when I have more cash for tires and pads. :)

For mostly street, auto-x fairly often: Hawk HP+

87 GXL, primarily an autox car, weekend street duty

Raybestos super stops, no noise and good wear although one front pad cracked after 3 events. I just replaced that corner and no problems after that. Probably not that great for road racing or anything that requires multiple high speed stops in succession but for autocrossing they were cheap, solid, and predictable.

I had hawk blues on the corolla rally car, those things were CRAZY! we were going to use them for the tarmac rallies in chatanooga, the problem is after about 75 miles of driving they destroyed the rotors, ate them almost in half, now i use pbr metal masters, just for gravel though, they work hard and dont fade that bad, the fading is more a cooling problem more so than the pads. there is a lot of left foot braking on gravel and it is easy to cook them. PF suck, they crumbled up into bits and peices after our first tarmac rally, i will use the blues for the next tarmac event, there is nothing like getting off the interstate and your friends freaking as they see your rotors glowing at nite time

I'll look you up when I wear these out, I've always had good luck with Carbotech pads on the TA, so I want to try these for a full pad cycle first..

You're dead on about the rotors being less important than pads, when I'm paying more for pads than rotors :)

any Carbon fiber pads are good, mostly for
Curcuit.. Metallic are still prefered.. I have
pads by TC, and they are the best I have
used so far. I have heard good things about
HAWK though..

But if you have slotted or drilled rotors go with
metallic...

Road/Track-lapping fr/rr pads are STOCK Sumitomo '99 Type RS Rx7. Very little dust accumulation during the daily commute, and work exceedingly well with my road tires (Yokohama AVS I's) and wheels (SSR Integral A2s) for track-lapping events.

High speed time-trialing competition fr/rr pads are Porterfield R4Es...outstanding match for the Hoosier R3S03s/SSR Competitions. R4E braking torque is not as high as Hawk Blue/Black or Carbotech Panther Plus/XP, but the R4Es are very gentle on brake rotors, and last a long while. I'm easily able to run with Porsche 911 Turbos with big-reds during the entire 30-minute 9 to 10/10ths lapping sessions without a hint of fade...quite amazing really!
