Simple question: ditch the oil level sensor in ITS car?
I've run with the level sensor disconnected as the buzzer in corners was driving me nuts but I'm still hesitant to remove it and cap the opening.
Do you guys rely on oil pressure to indiate if you have an issue with oil volume? I'm assuming if you have oil pressure who needs the level sensor, no? TIA Crispy |
Mine is gone. I use a baffled pan to help control the oil slosh. My data logger records oil pressure and has never indicated a problem with this set-up.
IF you don't have one, the baffled pans are available from ISCracing.net. You might be able to get them elsewhere also, but I know for sure that Mike has them. |
What he said. Though I recently heard ISC doesn't sell the plate anymore. Like most parts, Mazda Comp is one of the cheapest places to find it.

I'm running a stock pan with a RB baffle plate. Good enough?

Yep.

With or without a baffle the hole where the oil level sensor was is a great place to install a oil temp sending sensor. Remember oil in a rotary not only lubricates, it cools the rotors & oil temp has a large impact on hp.

Thanks guys.
David raises an interesting question. Measure oil temp in the pan after coming out of the engine or where I currently have my sensor, up on the oil filter tower, after the oil has passed through the coolers. I'm thinking engine exit temp not entry temp to be the better choice. Thoughts? Regards, Crispy |
Where do I locate the sensor on the motor?
Is it a standard thread size for a temp sending unit? |
Ideally you'd have two sensors. One before and after the cooler. Mine's in the pedestal. The RB catalog (great reference book BTW) says to keep temps below 210* at this point and that's good enough for me. If you're measuring oil in the pan and it's reading 260*, for example, you're taking for granted that the coolers are working and it's < 210* at re-entry to the motor.
EagleScout, there are a couple different blocks available that sandwich between the stock filter pedestal and the rear iron that allow the installation of a temp and/or pressure senders. Mazdatrix and RB both sell these pieces. |
Easy answer :)
Get rid of it. |
Cheap fix if you don't want to install a Baffle plate due to leaks, or the engine is already in the car is to overfill the oil slightly by 1/2 a quart

Mazda Motorsport prep manaul states oil temp at oil pan. I left oil level sensor in but replaced cool start assist sensor with oil temo probe
