Take it completely apart and re-size and re fit the collars and it will giver you some decent service. Add a steering wheel to the turning hub and it will make it easier to work by your self. bead roller |

Throat is 18" deep, you can reach in about 17" to the middle of a project if needed. Line everything up on the metal first and loosen up the rollers and mover the piece around to see if you can roll the pattern.
My roller is 18" deep also and hasn't been an issue. Caution, do not drop the HF rollers on the concrete floor, they will dent and will imprint the dent into your work. I would suggest after inspecting them is to have them hardened for longer life. |
Eric... I've got a HF model you can rent... say 10 a week? I know where you keep your car so I'm not worried about loosing it ;) Wait... TPR doesn't have one? Sounds like you need to bend Steves ear a little!
The extinguisher location isn't the greatest, but I was working w/i the owners parameters as well as making it accessable should he actually need it (the 10 lber seems a little overkill). I would have rather mounted it on the floor in front of the pass seat, but it wasn't my car.... |
Scott is that a handheld?!
|
huh! Still not stickied! Made some request but to no avail!
|
Well I was going to post some pictures of my cage here but it looks like Scott already beat me to it. haha
|
Go ahead, lets look at your perspective!

Drew Here is the picture from the manufacturer. The kits comes with the pre-bent piece plus the mounting hardware for one door. I usually like to make my own piece instead of buying this kit. Plate is welded to rocker/floor and then the tube is attached to the plate. Really simple! Oh yea! Woo Hoo, finally got this thread stickied!!!! :101384_l: |
allright...nice,is that chrome!!!
so as far as rules go, in the rx7 is the best place to weld this to the floor, or make a box between the rocker and floor. im trying to get ideas but i don't want to build junk. thanks drew |
do you sell your swing-outs or do you have a link to that manufacturer that makes them? i'd rather get them from you if you have a couple available.
Drew |
Try to tie it in to the rocker and floor. More rocker the better. The parts are not chrome, machined steel. The parts are the best for this application and are legal. Takes a little practice to position the hinge correctly to get the door bar to open out and down so it falls away from the seat. If you take your time you will be pleased with the out come!
No, I buy them the same a s you do. Alston has a huge buy in plus I like to do things my own way instead of using kits! |
thanks...i appreciate the info!

^^^ nice, thats a serious cage. what division?
Drew |
Just finished a 4130 roll cage in a civic but since it is a civic I am not going to post any pics. I doubt I will even take any pics.
Working a some other stuff, will post pics soon! |
Take some pics Russ! I've got a Civic coming in Sep. 1st and would like to know what I'm getting myself into ;)
|
BMW is a ?mod class in BMWCCA club racing.
|
Here is a few pics of the Civic.
Main hoop attached to floor in similar fashion to a SCCA cage. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/MVC-008F.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/MVC-009F.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/MVC-006F.jpg I used the SW swings out, not to be harsh but I do bot like them, They were here so I used them up. Prefere to use the ChassisWorks kits even though they cost twice as much! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/MVC-003F.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/MVC-002F.jpg |
Here is the new project this week, it is a 1100 CC Kawi powered Pro Truck Challenge truck form the South. Customer bought it and is going to run Road Race with it. Last owner ran NASA with it a couple of years back.
The only problem one of the first owners of it cheat the cage and made a few alterations to save weight. They cut the main hoop right at the function of the door bars and replaced the top half with .065". The halo and all support tube were changed also. Would have been OK I guess for the tracks this chassis was designed for. Plus it would have ran against only similar chassis. These weigh around 1200lbs. I have to fix it and try to get it to pass tech. I will be working with a local tech here to make sure it will be safe and pass. NASA never caught the cheat. Moral of the story, when buying a used race car, make sure all tubes are legal. Here is the cut and it is well hidden. Excuse the mess on the tables, been pretty hectic here! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ReFab/pro3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ReFab/pro4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ReFab/pro1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ReFab/pro2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ReFab/pro5.jpg Here is the truck running on a road race course back east somewhere http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...roTruck009.jpg |

We finished the Rayburn late Model chassis re-clip job today, all ready at the owners place to get the motor and body so he can race Saturday night.
Clip job turned out very well, was able to straighten most of the chassis and fab new front section and get the suspension back to Manufacturer Specs plus a few minor updates from us. |
Ok people, start posting your pictures. I know there are cages and chassis being built, lets see them.
I am posting the link to a page from my photobucket account. It is of a cage we cut out of a C5R Corvette that was done last year. It is supposed to be a 4130 cage to meet the specs for Salt flats Racing. Car went and was refused, they really is no explanation why the builder/shop let this out of the door. I know who the shop was but I will not say since I did not actually see the car there. Cage is one of the worst I have ever seen and I am guessing the material is not 4130 and the bending is horrible. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v3...20flat%20cage/ |
Sorry Russ! Too many things going on lately... I'm way behind!
A spec 944: http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/imag...4/P1010014.JPG http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/imag...4/P1010016.JPG ITS 924... owner was very concerned about weight, so we went minimalist :) http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/imag...4/P1010002.JPG Porsches:http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/PorscheCages.html T1 Viper redo (semi before/lateral bar and windshield bar already done): http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/imag...e/P1010001.JPG after: http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/imag...e/P1010009.JPG Redid the lateral bar (moved it outward and changed the bend angle), changed the angle of the diagonal and raised the harness bar so that a new seat could be installed. Owner is about 6'6" and had to tilt his head to drive it, the belts came off his shoulder, angled down about 30 deg, through the seat, then back up 30 deg to the shelf as the orig. harness bar was useless for him! MOre Pics: http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/T1Viper.html |
Dude, I had to hire a guy. I am just freaking swamped. I know what you mean. Glad to hear you are blessed!

ACK! Good thing they brought the Vette to you Russ! That cage had roundy round builder written all over it!

Everything was illegal. worst thing the SCTA rules for Bonneville are one page long. How could a shop screw that up? |

First, I think the Vette cage was done at a Midas Muffler shop.
Here is a pic I dug up of a 914 I did for a guy running vintage. There are still a few bars to add but the guy didn't want to climb over them while assembling the rest of the car. I'll get other shots as I go. The car is getting a real 6 cyl put in it but he didn't want the 914-6 bubble flares. I had to put in new floors, the body looked like a bag a coconuts when I started. I also painted it. |

I am really having an issue with this cage we are building for the vette. Damn car has a removable glass top which has handles and gizmos all over the place. There is a huge frame around the glass to clamp on to. When the top is off it looks like the cage doesnt fit the top. With it on it fits great.

Hrmmm... John, I'm digging the sleeve idea on the main doorbar. I tend to run the main bar of the X a little higher on the Hoop attachment point so I can access the weld through the side window. I'm going to borrow that sleeve idea if I ever get a driver over 6' that sitting on the floor! :D
I dunno how guys race the 944's. I haven't been able to fit one yet once I install the seat where the drivers want it. 944's must attract short torsoed drivers. |
We are done enough. Rules for the Salts are really straight forward and simple. Leaves alot for interpretation. Gussets at all the joints and recommended that they be spot welded to the outside of the joint. ???
I am happy with it except for the top, looks like a Tard did it. Everything fits so well except for the top. Oh well, top will be on most of the time. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ge/newside.jpg Used swing outs, not in the rule book but I did not see anywhere where it said I couldn't do it. If it is a problem he can weld it up once he is there. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...withgusset.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...e/newside2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...20cage/top.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...cage/pass3.jpg It leaves tomorrow. Then it will come back for all of th window nets. Yeah! |

Hey Guys...here are a few pix of a street 4pt bar that John at Berg Racing did for me. Its a bolt in bar, the main hoop bolts to plates that were welded to the crossbeam behind the seats, and the rear bars use a plate sandwich thru the wheel well. Been wanting one of these for a long, long time...Thanks John!!!

-a Everything I do is based off people that I know and I think how would they do it and then I try to make it better. I really think between the shops that post here our quality has improved because of the competition. Now I have to do a bolt in bar! Damn!! LOL!!!! |
btw...a question i must ask. why is it that nobody ever welds the cage to the actually chassis of the car? if you look at my 2nd and 3rd picture you'll se what im talking about on my hoop. i welded it to the side of the car for extra strength. then again im also not going out of a rule book...

Its been a awhile, I thought I would share with all what we have been doing.
Had to repair an Auto Cross chassis that biffed the fence and curb pretty hard at Portland International Raceway 3 weeks ago. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...o%20X/36fe.jpg Bent the frame and all of the suspension parts. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...to%20X/AX1.jpg Made all the suspension arms adjustable, customer had to pull all the fasteners to make the adjustments. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...to%20X/AX2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...to%20X/AX3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...to%20X/AX5.jpg Car turned out very nice and customer was excited in getting it back in a week. |
