It gots lots of attention at the races this weekend! Everyone was asking about the mid-am logo and the Kansas city region logos.

Marcus, who vows to never do a 4 hour enduro in a car with an 8 gallon cell that will only pick up 4.5 gallons ever again. 8 pit stops in 4 hours....

It is a very good bender for the money as long as you are not doing production. Holds up well and is portable and somewhat lite. I have done many a cage with it and then sold it. Guy that bought still has it. Manufactured by Carey Machine.

On the topic of roll cages, i just bought a spec 7 car with a bolt in autopower cage. Am i going to die?

Russ, what is the horizontal X between the rear shock towers and the main hoop for?
I'm guessing side impact?

Side impact and help make the car stiffer. Been using them in Second and third Gen cars because the doors are so long and the hoops are rather close to the driver. Anchors the main hoop to the car and stiffens the suspension points lower and keep the weight low to the ground.

Generally mains hoops are just welded to the chassis without much lower support, should help to distribute the side loads throughout the chassis rather than taking the full force.

Wish I would have taken a picture of it, can't see it in the pics. When Roadracejosh brings it back for the horizontal bar, I will take pics of it.

just a question...I purchased a 4 point cage from cpracing. 1 3/4 tubing with a .095 wall. Im only looking to do EMRA time trial events, possibly some NASA time trials, and some local hill climbs. Basically my weekend driver and intorudction into future racing categories.

The cage however doesnt have a diagional brace, but has a bar straight across for harness attachment. Will this cage not pass tech? It will only be bolted in with the proper hardware (plan on getting a full welded in cage sometime in the future) Im worried about disqualfying myself from oppertunities.

What do the EMRA and NASA rules say about roll hoops?

EMRA usually tries to follow SCCA rules when safety is concerned. Their prep manual is available here:

In time trials they do not require roll bars on closed cars so anything should pass tech. However if your shoulder harness is attached only to the horizontal bar, they will want that bar to be secure. If you decide to go road racing later, you will need a full cage anyway.

I do not think that anything you have described would have to be removed if the roll hoop were to be expanded to a full cage but I am not a tech inspector.

Doin a RallyOmni, be done next week. Doing all of the door panels in Aluminum, cage will be done tonight. Seats are in transit also. Have another and a Subie also. I dig the Rally Cages! I will get some better shots when I am done tonight! Hope all had a good Thanksgiving?

Looks great Russ! I wanted to do a roof X on the above Subaru, but the driver didn't want it as he's fairly tall.

We're STILL waiting on freaking seats :(

My seats are still out also, car is leaving tomorrow and will come back for the seat mounts and install. Added a few more pics. I really like doing these, if it wasn't for the fact I need the money to pay bills, I would do these for free!

Really need to get more natual light for the stupid pictures. Shop really isn't this dark!

The 250/500 watt halogen shop lights work really well for back-lighting in combo with a regular camera flash.

I'm sponsoring the Subaru I just did.... believe me, doing them for "free" ain't much fun when someone willing to pay you is waiting in line ;)

Russ ive read through this entire thread and i have a few questions for you. First off in the pictures i attached (your pictures) ive seen some fc's with the main hoop unibody plates mounted here and some with the plates mounted on the floor just ahead of this. in your opion which place is more structurally sound? the reason i ask is that i have just started my NHRA spec cage and have welded in my plates in the same spot that you have them mounted as in the pics below. Another question i have is that to my knowledge SCCA spec cages are allowed to be painted but does the same go with NHRA? I have a question on your welds also. It looks to me as though all of your cages are done with MIG. Is there any particular reason you've decided to use MIG over TIG? And out of curiosity do you find it easier to weld your joints with a stitch technique or continuous?
and on a side note it looks as though you ran into seam sealer fires also. i had to stop every inch or so on the outer edge of my plate in order to keep my seam sealer fire to an absolute minimum. :bigthumb:

Wow, not sure! Everybody has there own ideas where the plates should be. I try to find an area that has the most material that can support the plates. I try to think where the loads are going to be and where the main hoop will be in relation to the seat and head of driver.

As to the discoloration around the plates, I scrape the filler off and out of the crevises with a pick, Mac Tool Hog, and sometime a butane torch for the deap stuff. That is the burnt stuff you see. Stich or complete seam welding seems to be controlled by material and ability of welder. I like a little extra heat for good penatration, which also makes me do small lengths of welds to keep from burning holes into the chassis.

Most of the cages posted are Mig welded because the cages are 1020 DOM. It take about a 3rd longer to Tig all the welds and most customers won't pay the extra price.
I try to weld the tube joints in 3rds also, depending on location and articulation of my hand and torch tip.

On painting, paint away. I would recommond painting after you get it inspected by your local Division Tech if you are 4130. Help reaffirm the tech on quality of welds when he has a clean and clear view of the joints.

Feel free to contact your local Division Tech and see what he would like to see, all are different. Mine has seen a lot of work from me and each tech is easier than the last.

here are a couple shots i snapped today. Main hoop and rear down bars should be finished tommorow. I also got a chance to snap a couple pics of some other projects happening. The frame on the frame bench is for a model A and as you can see is getting a huge step notch. The buggy in the picture is nearing completion it is pretty wild. The drag truck is getting an entire tubular chassis built as we speak and hopefully ill be able to post some pictures of that in the near future. And then theres my measly little rx7 getting a roll cage and momo seat lol.

oh yeah and the chevelle is getting mini tubbed, kicked in rears, notched, and fully custom 9" housing.

Way cool, I usede to build rock crawlers, got away from it. Really enjoy seeing those. Thanks! Still mini tub car though!

I wanted to show a few pics of what some cars go through and what it looks like from my perspective. I am doing two cars simultaneously, both are 94 Supra's. One is a 9+ sec and the other is a consistent 10:20 car. 9+ car is receiving a custom 4130 roll cage and the other is getting a 6pt Roll Bar.

Pics I am posting is of the 9+ sec. car. It is has gotten the whole interior removed for the process and it all has to go back in when I am done. You can see some of the wires and stuff we must work with from time, stereo, amps, speakers, AEM computer, and etc.

Lot of extra work from time to time!
