SCCA San Francisco Region Rounds 9, 10 - Infineon Sept 4,5

There should be some good racing this weekend at Infineon. See the schedule and current entry list. Three FDs will compete in Group 1, Niles (Shpnout), Bill (Blackey) and me.
Beyond Group 1, Group 2 includes crazy fast formula and sports cars, Group 7 is the Spec Miatas [52 signed up so far], and of course Group 3, the ground pounder GT1s and SPs. There are some insanely fast cars (#45 1980 Vette with ~800RWHP; #9 555cu in 1971 Mercury Cyclone) in the field.

Hope to see you there...

Guy

It's going to be a great weekend!......A lot of hang out time. Only a race on Saturday, Sunday early qual then late race. Come on out!

Everyone should check out the Mercury mentioned above. "Merc9racer" on youtube.

Great racing action and a serious bummer to have that happen when you passed him..thanks for posting

lonetlan 09-05-10 04:00 PM

Wait... So you took the lead and blew your engine?

MakoRacing 09-05-10 05:46 PM

Im actually at the track now, lol, I work at a shop here and didnt even see any of the FD's yesterday :/ I saw a couple FB's and a FC just now though lol

SHPNOUT 09-05-10 10:41 PM

Yep.......had the pass and the motor popped......

Anyone have a spare? :-)

Brent Dalton 09-06-10 10:28 AM

Dude! Great video Niles!! I have thoroughly enjoyed keeping up with your guys ITE this year. Sorry about the engine. You know Fritz has one laying around :) Not sure if you are trying to make it back to the track for next weekend though. Hopefully it didn't get into the turbo.

SHPNOUT 09-06-10 06:47 PM

Glad you liked the video. I just wish there was more of it. I was having a lot of fun. Thanks........nope, my seasons over. I go back to work tomorrow unitl November. Plenty of time to find/build a motor and get the turbo sorted if needed.

Guy will still be running the rest of the season. I think he's 3rd or so in points??

Hey there... I noticed you hanging out in the front of the group... nice job.
Someone told my son that they had a video posted on here of our car breaking a hub and going off track in turn 3. Have you seen that video posted anywhere?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I have the video of your son in the yellow 1st gen. It certainly was a high pucker moment when I came upon him spinning between 3a and 4! It would have been really ugly if he didn't get the car locked down. I should have the video posted here tomorrow.

Hi Guy:

Much appreciated. I've always said the front hubs on these 1st gen cars are junk so we put on new hubs every year. This set had only one other weekend on them. But if one was going to break I think turn 3 was not a bad place to have it happen. Since this is the second hub we've had fail I think I'll pick up a set of the billet hubs like I should have done 4 years ago. I talked to another 1st gen team who put new hubs on for each race!

Cheers,
Jim

Here's what it looked like from inside the car... one lap around Infineon and then disaster...

Hi Jim,

Your son was putting up some clean consistent lap times until his untimely mechanical malfunction. Turns out this spin is not the one that occurred directly in my path. There were two yellow, 1st gens in the race (#68 and #86). Anyway, my video is uploading as I write this. Are you traveling to Thill in a few weeks? I'll be there as well as Laguna in October.

Best,

Guy

Here is a link to Sunday's race at Infineon. I qualified forth with a time of 1:50.3. Enjoy!

Friends Bob Bradfield and Rusty Carl were in the red '83 FB....Nice car. Bob Bradfield is the guy who tried to race the entire 25 hours at Thunderhill a few years back. He made it 19 hours and 45 minutes, no joke....I would have gone if I wasn't on a trip.

jimeby 09-12-10 10:42 AM

Hey Guy...
Thanks for the positive comments. We had tons of fun at this event. I counted 5 yellow RX7s in one group... one was your's of course. besides us there were two other yellow first gens. And yes, one was the 86 which looked nearly identical to our 68. So much so that we were accidentally directed into impound to "discuss" the several on-track issues charged to the 86.
We were pitted close to you but sorry we never got a chance to stop in to chat. We did have a few nice chats with Bob and Rusty who were pitted near us also.
Unfortunately we won't make the Thunderhill event but I'll be at Laguna in Oct driving the car myself. I'll look for you then.
I posted a video of the Sunday group 11 race which we ran after a quick hub repair. If you don't blink it shows you breezing past Jack to put us a lap down...
Cheers,
Jim

Great video. Lots of good action there. What are the dates/main days at Laguna in October? I may go if so. Would I pay to get in and all that or what?? Yeah Bob and Rusty are pretty cool guys they have a nice car and it's got a 13B with Webers...

finger lock 09-15-10 08:14 PM

The dates for Laguna are October 16 and 17th. The 16th will be the 13th and final round (double points) of the San Francisco Region Schedule. The event on the 17th is the four hour RDC Illgen Enduro. I'll be running my car both days. The schedule is here. There is a fee for to enter the grounds (5$ ?).

bmeyer 09-18-10 11:03 AM

Yeah man looks like I'm going on the 16/17th. Be a pretty cool few days there, I used to go to ALMS, Rolex Sports Series, and MotoGP but I can't spend 50-60 bucks all the time on a race. MotoGP is way too crowded, I'd rather go to AMA which is less so.

I'll look for you down on the Paddock and hopefully run across you..

finger lock 09-18-10 06:03 PM

Stop on by at Laguna, there should be some shade at my trailer and some cold ones in the cooler. Laguna also brings out some really cool race cars and really good racing!

See you there!

Guy

bmeyer 09-20-10 11:07 AM

Thanks man. I'll be there Sat, and Sun. I'm even going to miss the Rams game to go watch racing, ha ha.
