SCCA Question
 

From what i have read on the SCCA site, club racing is the only way to do hillclimbs, however the way they break it down in the 'club racing level's, it seems that hillclimb's is something thats not aviilable for a novice.

Is this correct?

It also seems that street cars are not aloud aswell, only purpouse built race cars?

Is this correct as well?

We put on a big hill climb down here called the Crow Mountain HIllclimb.

You must get a TT license, either by completing a TT school plus one flat track TT event, or you get it by completing 3 flat track TT events.

Solo class Street Prepared and Street Mod cars are allowed, as long as they have a SCCA approved roll bar behind the driver (a full roll cage is not required.) You must have at least a 5 point harness, and a Snell SA rated helmet, and an approved fire suit and gloves, and a fire extinguisher.

In New England SCCA does not do hillclimbs but New England Hillclimb association does. Check out http://hillclimb.org/

Anyone here know what exactly is required in terms of preparation for a street car to participate in one of these events? My car's just set up for HPDE type events with a 4 point roll bar, 6 point harnesses and not much else. I'd love to participate if it doesn't require too much additional car setup. The Pahillclimb site says "roll bar or roll cage" but isn't any more specific as to what requirements must be met. I hope to get involved as soon as next season.

Then add a 4 point roll bar and your harness. The roll bar must have a diagonal brace across the main hoop to strengthen it.
Minimum tubing size shall be 1.5" dia x .120" wall or 1.75" dia x .095" wall thickness.
ERW tubing will be banned soon if not already; you should use DOM tube.

The SCCA is very strict in my region about roll bars and harness meeting the strict letter of the rule book. If the roll bar is built weaker or out of thinner steel or whatever that does not meet the minimum SCCA rules, then fix it before showing up at a Time Trail. Some SCCA safety inspectors take their job very seriously and will not let you run if you do not meet the rules. NASA is much more lax in their rules.

I have one of the M2/raceshop bars with a diagonal brace but it's chromoly steel so... is that out of the question? I don't know the thickness offhand.

edit: it seems to address the chromoly issue in the manual you linked to but I'm unsure of the construction requirements nor the material/thickness used.

Does anyone ever run downhills? Or is the whole safety issue paramount?
