SCCA legal cage?

I wanted to know if the car I just bought has an SCCA legal cage installed or not. It is an 8 point chome-moly cage welded in professionally. Anyone know how to tell?

Tube size?
Tube Thickness?
7th and 8th Points - Where?
Welded to any other parts of chassis other than mounting feet?
What are the door bars like?
How many and how configured are the down tubes from main hoop back?
Any other tubes in the main hoop?
How thick are the base plates the cage it welded to?
How many square inches are each of the plates?

That will be a start

I just saw the other post you have on this. You need to see if evil is correct that 4130 is no longer legal. Go to www.improvedtouring.com and ask someone to please let you know the 03 current cage materials and sizes. I can help you on if it is legal and for what class it would be legal if you find out about the material. My GCR is from 01.

ERW is what they outlawed.

I gotta go look at it but I will get back to you guys on this thread. I only saw it once in the dark. Theres no real way to tell about the thickness is there?

There should be an inspection hole somewhere so the tech inspectors can check the tube thickness.

Actually now you are required to have a hole in every required peice of tubing. Ride, Who'd you buy the car from? Was it log booked? If so, then its legal.

No the car has never seen a track yet. The cage was built and intalled down in Miami. I am going to be selling the car pretty cheap or just the chasis with the cage possibly and people wanted to know if it was SCCA legal.

Ok....I thought 4130 was ok.

Take a look at the cage and get the answers for the questions I posted above and I can help you.

First off, what SCCA class are you going to race a TurboII in? I wanted to race mine, but couldn't find a class besides ITE (and that is just basically a "let's play around" class ranging from high powered corvettes to whatever.. includes basically anything not tube frame, as long as you can find a rulebook that said it's legal in some other race class, so if you found a class that allowed 800 horse rotaries on a stock chassis with a rollcage, you're in ITE)

If this is the car bought from the guy in Miami (I forget his name) I don't *think* it's legal with the last two "points". At least not for Improved Touring. From what I understand (I asked a lot about it), the first 6 points are cool, but the last two points are little supports that go right behind the driver (so there's two supports on each side behind the driver and passenger, one on each side in front of the driver, and one on each side by the shock tower). Those EXTRA two points behind the driver I don't think are legal. The only legal "8-point" cage that I know of is to have two additional points by the drivers feet (for a total of four "points" in front of the driver, four behind), and the extra two points by the drivers feet are for foot protection.

Not quite right on the additional IT points. There are 2 (two) optional points/pads that must be in the footwell. Only 1 on each side (driver and pass. side). You can have however many tubes you want hitting those two points and the points may be up to 100" square.

isn't that what I said?

Silkworm 11-11-03 01:05 AM

LOL, yeah. You're both right :)

If the extra two points are there but not legally, it doesn't sound to me to be a big issue, sawzall those puppies right on out :)
