SCCA GT3 rules????
 

After watching the GT3 runoffs, I tried to find the rules they use for the rotary cars in GT3 on the website. Anyone know where you can find info dealing with engine type (what do they run, 12A, 13b?), weight, tire sizes, etc.

The SCCA (aka Secret Car Club of America) makes you buy their GCR (General Competition Rulebook) and does not publish it on their website www.sca.org

The SCCA does not publish the rules on-line. Since the rules change from year to year (sometimes from month to month), it would be better to buy a 2004 GCR when they become available in late December/January. The website is: http://www.scca.org

The 2003 GCR has the GT3 RX-7 (along with RX-2, and RX-3) using the 12A with a 2 barrel carb (i.e. weber). The quickest way to get racing is to buy an existing race car. A good source of cars for sale is SCCA's magazine, Sports Car.

The 1st gen 7 is also raced in GT2, ITA and E Production.

According to the 2003 SCCA GCR:

Engine size:
Rx-2 =12a rotary
Rx-3 =12a rotary
Rx-7 =12a rotary

Carburetor:
1- automotive type 2 bbl type w/40mm venturis

No peripheral port. Bridge port allowed with 38mm venturis.

Also you can put a 12a in Mx-3 and Mx-6

the rules get so specific... the easiest thing to do is get your hands on a GCR

why just a 12A? Why not a 13B, non turbo. Granted anyone interested in racing would want to know the same thing, but more than likely it will be speculation on our part. Too much HP and torque for the class it's currently in?

They are limited on hp but also with weight. I am pretty sure that you can run a second gen in GT3 also with a 13B but do not have my rule book here. The RX-7 also can run in GT-1 and GT-2 with either the 20B in GT-1 and a 13B in GT-2.

FC's can run 13B's in E-prod (in 6 port config) w/ either a carb on a custom manifold or FI w/ the stock manifold.
GT-3 is for UNDER 2.5 L cars (iirc) and the SCCA classifies a 13b as 2.6L

I know E Production allows both 12a and 13b, but try to balance them by weight penalties and other motor and drivetrain restictions. Don't know exactly whats up with GT3.

13Bs are in GT2.

How competitive are the 13B's in GT2? I love the FD race body and when I was at Road Atlanta, with less SCCA racing knowledge, was dismayed that they were running the 12A's in GT3. Thanks for clarifying why they are in GT3 and 13B in GT2.
Any SCCA category that allows a turbo'd rotary?

Looking at the race field for the GT2 and GT3 category for this year's runoffs, 2 7's in GT2, 12 12A's in GT3. One of the RX3's finished in the top 5 I think..Gary Bockman.

Only two rotaries in GT2 at the Runoffs says something.

But SCCA is trying to revive GT2. Last several years it's had rather low car counts as a class. One of the things they're doing is allowing 13b Peripheral Port in GT2. That should help bring more rotaries, and more cars to the class. It would do quite well with that motor.

Other than that, just surf all the SCCA Region Classifieds and see if anything appealing pops up. I know I've seen a bunch of GT RX-7's in Sportscar, you might see if you can get a month or two old copy from somebody in your area.

How did the 20B car do in GT1 a couple of years back. I saw it for sale for around 50K last year I think.

20b: Not competitive against the big V8 in GT1.

NA 20b is, what around 500 hp, but low on torque. Atleast that's what the ad for the 20b GT1 race car stated. Maybe he's being generous. Yeah, I can see where the built v-8's have the advantage coming out of turns and having the torque to pull away.

I can back what drivefast7 said about GT2. I have the Jan issue of sports car infront of me and in the fast track new section on page F-1 "classification fo the peripheral port 13B into GT2,allow new motors to be classified for use in older chassis's. These changes are affective 1/1/04." PASSED The down side to this,oh yea you knew there would be..."reclassification of the Panoz GTS to GT@,reclassification of the Porsche cup car into GT2."

the ad for panoz gts1 says 385hp

the most i've heard a normally aspirated peripheral port (56mm gene berg ida carb with 48mm chokes) is 360 at the flywheel.

sounds like serious competition.
