Run Cool all day with 10 pounds/boost?

Is it possible to track my FD with my mods running only 10 pounds of boost and keep the temps down?
I planned on a 35r to simplify things ...But my car is running flawlessley with plenty of power at 15 lbs on stock twins.
So,is it realistic to run for 30 minutes and keep the temps tolerable in the summer heat?
(Just installed 2 CWR oil coolers,99 spec front with ducting)

I think you should be able to keep the temps to a reasonable level with those mods and only 10 PSI.

How cool are you looking for? I start to get nervous around 105 C and I will just take it a bit easy for a half lap or lap if needed. When I do go to the track, it's only for fun, so I'd rather back off a bit than push it and do damage.

B/4 I preplaced my old motor I saw 118/119 on the PFC! at the track (pretty insane) I had a bad coolant seal leaking coolant, but it still didnt blow up!
I went back to the track last year with my new motor and was getting about 85C on the pfc and I remember telling myself if it gets to 90 I,ll short shift, pull in for a bit whatever..but it never did.
So running 12 pounds helped, having the oil coolers helped but it was a cooler day about 65 degrees so a pretty cool day in all.
Can I keep it <100 C in the summer heat running my current setup?any other ideas?
Carl.

Depends upon ambient temps at the track you're running. With those upgrades, you should not have not problem as long as temps are below 90-95.

I've run all day long at 90 degree heat at Road atlanta with similar mods/boost, but with the addition of a larger radiator and 99 spec lip/splitter. Water temps were always below 100C. Important thing is to mitigate spillover on the sides of the rad, no FMIC, and use water wetter with minimal coolant.

I'd caution using a midpipe with stock twins on the track unless you've ported your wastegate. I've had SERIOUS problems with creep when I had the twins. For example, at 10 PSI, I'd get creep to 14 beyond 120 MPH in 4th.

I always run 10-11 psi on the track and on the street. I had problems getting too hot at the track even at 10psi until I did the following:

Larger Aluminium Radiator
Dual Oil Cooler
Carefully Ducted Radiator
Large Stock Mount Intercooler
Water Pumper Underdrive pulley (this actually was very important for me)
85/15 water to coolant mix

Most track days I attend are in the 80s on the track

The thing that made the biggest difference for me was completely removing the a/c system. I was able to run 14 psi for 30 min sessions in September in Texas, when the temps were still pretty hot, high 80s I would guess. Peak coolant temp for the day was 99 degrees celcius :).

On average days I can sometimes get away with running 12psi, but on the really hot ones, I usually take it down to 9psi and it still gets hot. Must be the fact that I dont have any ducting around the radiator + I still have the AC which is too close to my Koyo for my taste. I would get rid of it, but I like the AC too much (although I need to get it refilled).

Again and again I have seen examples (in this forum) of people running hot on the track and their fix for this problem was to make sure that the ducting around the radiator was absolutely sealed to force all the air through the unit. So my best recommendation is to make sure all those little holes get closed up.

Good idea..did you notice any benefit cooling wise with a 99 front end?

Yes and no. I havent tracked the FD yet with the new front bumper. when i park next to my dad's R1, I can really see the diff in the openings for the oil cooler and rad......the car almost runs too cold in the cooler NJ temps, so we shall see. I think at speed on a track the 99 front will really help keep oil and coolant temps down. I plan on road-racing the FD as much as possible once the weather warms up (are you listening Matty ?) :D

Ducting around the radiator... Any recommendations on what to use? Aluminium sheets (hard to make), duct tape (ghetto yo! :D ), foam (semi-ghetto, easy to do, not durable?) ?

John Magnuson 01-26-05 12:28 PM

Just use a high quality foam and duct tape. Sure it's "ghetto" but it works well and nobody can see it if you do it right. My foam and duct tape system has held up well for over a year.
