Road Racing RX7 lost power #2 Water Inj.
 
After analyzing the hot air intake tempertures at the track issue further...
and doing several searches...
and thinking about it...

Why not use water injection just to try to reach ambient air intake tempertures while all other factors remain the same??? (ambient is about 90-100F)

Everything points to the this being the end of intercooler debates and hot air. (Assumming the car is already prepared to handle all the other requirements of running about 20psi)

Too good to be true??? Downsides???

Any comments on why or why not do WI for road racing?

Will the WI pump and water tank be capable of withstanding 30min heats?

Info from people that use WI at a road course track will be greatly appreciated.

with enough capacity I see no reason this cannot work and work well. I use a shur flow pump. It is designed to give RVs water for faucets and showers. Id think it would have no problem handling the relatively intermittent flow needed on the track. Even at a road race event you are probably only boosting maybe 60-70% of the time at most.
I have not run an event with my water injection on. but Im sure it would do good things to reduce the overall engine heat through the event.

What about water consumption, how big of a water reservoir for 30min track time?
Any experience with packaged products (like aquamist etc.)?

aquamist rocks, i love their setups, it's so quality

zerobanger also makes kits on the forum, you should PM him

30mins will be no problem for a 2 gallon resevoir

IMO, you'll be better off getting a more efficient IC setup.

While I understand the capabilities of water injection I would never consider it for anything other than a drag race car. You're adding another system of complexity and maintenance that you don't need when you could just use a larger/better intercooler.

If you add WI and tune for it it's just one more thing that can kill the motor if it were to fail. Hell, it doesn't even have to fail, it just has to run empty. I would absolutely without a doubt have some sort of switch from the water injection that opens the wastegate completely via the boost controller if the water level or pressure were to drop...

Any concerns on water injection other than:

1) pump failing
2) water running out

If it is used only to cool intake air to just a bit above ambient (assumming WI can do this in a hot day at high boost) then if the WI fails you are just back to square one = heatsoaked.
I feel the engine will not be damaged unless you have tuned to an aggressive WI only condition.

The fact that the current maps will work after the WI is installed and cooling intake air to ambient suppossedlly WILL NEED TO BE CONFIRMED ONLY AFTER TESTING AT THE TRACK.

So I still don't know if this will work but based on what I've been able to read on WI it should and I'm willing to try it?

How many of you have lost (or damaged somehow) an engine due to WI?

PS: probably a V-mount may help my condition but it will result in extensive shop work to change a setup that I currently like and works well below the 20psi level.

don't tune for water injection, use it to keep temps controlled

for drag racing, tune for water/alcohol

I will be doing a track event Oct 1. I will log laps with and without WI.

I agree with 93Black about not tuning for it. I have a bright blue LED that lights when there is pressure at the nozzle, so if the light is on I know 100% that it is working. If it goes out under boost, then there's a problem, but I am still on my safe map so no big deal. I can already tell you I notice a big differences in temps under boost, so there is no doubt that my temps on the track will be cooler.

Also, the benifits of WI can't be measured just by the temp sensor. It cools temps even further once the air enters the engine during the combustion process. Something that can NEVER be recreated by just getting a better IC.

I figure water for minimum 10% of the fuel volume.
40 liter fuel, 4 liter water
