Road Race Turbo for 550 rwhp

Hello all, I'm ready to move up. Please no "search flames", I want the most up to date current info possible. I want to put 550 to the rear wheels. I am not a clueless newbie, and my current set up is dialed. I am looking for a turbo for a road race car which sometimes sees the strip. I'm thinking T66, oil and water cooled, undivided, bb, .81ar q trim. what do you think? I hope to just "bolt on" I may need a second external pump w/surge tank, we will see. Current set up makes 440 rwhp.
here is my current set up;
1988 TII
13BREW W/88 PLATES STREETPORTED
TO4S .60 COMP./.81EXH. 3.5" VBAND
CAST UNDIVIDED MANIFOLD
E6K
720/1600 INJECTORS
BOSCH PUMP(NEED TO CHECK WHICH ONE)
-6AN FUEL LINES
HKS FMIC
HKS RACING BOV
DUAL STOCK OIL COOLERS
HUGE GRIFFIN CUSTOM RADIATOR
CUSTOM 3.5" EXHAUST

wow, so 440 isn't enough for road racing? I was thinking of running 450rwhp with a GT35/40 eventually...but apperently doesn't look like that will be enough

NICE SETUP! what does your suspension look like? cause your car sounds really nice

Carl Byck 11-08-02 08:43 PM

440 should be plenty for most racing. I'm running in NASA Super Unlimited, like the name says, there are some beasts in the class. even at 440 a cuople of these guys can leave me behind on the front straight. Mainly there is no such thing as too much power. I am a PIG!!! As for suspension, it's just your basic Ground control setup w/koni yellows. Springs are 500lb front, 275lb rear. Adjustable sway bars front and rear, full mazdaspeed bushing set, 17x8s all around with 235-40-17 RA1s. Carl

better suspension setup and larger tires may give you a better launch down the straight. try carrying more speed onto the front straight and around the rest of the track. big HP is not always the answer to faster lap times. lots of time is lost slowing down for corners and accelerating out of corners. minimise this and you will go faster.

where did you mount your second oil cooler? and where did u pick up your undivided manafold from?

Carl Byck 11-09-02 02:10 PM

Tims, you know your right, but I just love that big HP!!! I may eventually learn to drive, but in the mean time I want big hp... BCTY, second oil cooler is mounted in front of the radiator at the top. Same orientation as the stock location just at the top. Keep in mind, my radiator goes from the belly shroud to th top of the radiator support at a 15 degree angle(big custom radiator). To make this work properly I cut a 24" x 3" hole in the center of the bumper, similar to the RE, and Feed bumpers but larger. I also removed the back of two bolts that hold the hood to the hinges, and cantilevered the hood up two inches in the back. It looks like an exagerated cowl induction setup(added hood pins for safety). All this netted track temps oil, and water of around 190 while making +/-380rwhp.

any pics? i would love to actually see this monster :)

No pics, but I have some video of me behind him at Sears, you can definitely see the power differences ;)

Carl, so you know, you're definitely putting out black smoke on hard acceleration, you'll see what I mean in the video..

Carl Byck 11-11-02 10:37 PM

c'mon Paul, give me a little credit there is a driver holding on to the steering wheel of that "power difference"... Black smoke? Alot, a little? Anybody want to comment? Cause? No premix, What gives? Paul are you able to post the video? When will Head On have pics posted? I know Albert was completely sideways in 11 right in front of me. He said he let me by... I think that slow ass third gen couldn't keep up.

Silkworm 11-11-02 11:34 PM

Video is up: http://para.noid.org/~silkworm/spir-...hasingcarl.wmv

As for credit, not sure what you want me to say, you're a good driver, sure, but come on, you've got, according to you, 2 to 2.5 times the horsepower that my car has.. I don't lose any ground to you out of 3a or into braking going into 4, I miss a shift exiting 4 or it might have been a little closer there, but going up the hill for 5 is pure horsepower.. I get a little bit of ground back exiting the carousel (gotta use all the track, u and me both), but you pull me out on the straight..

You're a pretty good driver, but I don't think I'm a bad driver myself (though I still have lots to learn (like not following other people's lines! Man I made a mess in turn 10 after my spin ;)) The Head-On pics will be up soon, they're down at Laguna today and tomorrow for an event.

Oh, for those watching the vid, we got the checkers out of turn 8, which is why I slowed waaaaay down..

Paul,

what's the story with the camera focus? Are you recording the tach for some reason? You of all people should have a wide angle lense on that camera. nice clear shot but you need to see the rest of the track in front of you.

Silkworm 11-12-02 09:48 AM

Bad preparation..

I was installing the battery and hit the damn zoom button and didn't check the setting before going out for my last two sessions..

My first session is much better.. (hanging head in shame) :)

Chronos 11-13-02 04:18 AM

post the first session :)

Silkworm 11-13-02 09:53 AM

I will, but I'll wait until the 23-24th when I go out again..

LMAO...

that website is priceless....
:D

3isacharm 11-26-02 04:52 PM

how is that guy still on this forum? he sucks in every possible way. and oh yeah, the new hks gt30 pro is supposed to make some decent power, but it's fairly new. a t52r kai will slow you down on a road course until the straightaway. too much lag.

Chronos 11-26-02 06:27 PM

I thought the T51 KAI wasn't BB??? I posted a thread like this a while back and everyone said that the T51 is too big and has a lot of lag, and once the power comes on your back end just goes out of control...Did they come out with a new unit that's BB or something? Less lag?

BTW, That web site blows my mind...I mean I do know there are some LAME people in this world, but I think that kid and his little buddies take the cake!! hahahah

definately worth looking at for a laugh (or a cry) if you havn't seen it.

Chronos 12-03-02 02:51 AM

Anyone have any stats on the new T51R (t52r?) KAI BB turbo...someone on this thread mentioned it was 1000rpm quicker spool which would be 3,000rpm which would be awesome, but someone else I was talking to who runs a T51R KAI nonBB said they only spool 500rpm quicker, which I'm not sure if that would warrant all the extra money...anyone know about the responce time??? Joe (T51quicksilver), I heard you have some experience with these units...any comments?

Thx!

racedriver 12-03-02 11:20 PM

440 hp seems high for your set up. Is this a guess?
