Rhys Millen's '88 AWD rally car video!

Might be a repost, but here's some neat footage of Rhys Millen's infamous AWD FC running back in the day.

Enjoy!

thats a pretty cool video!

jdm_emperor 11-23-08 12:39 AM

sounds so nice

justint5387 11-23-08 12:40 AM

It is Rod Millen. His dad

NoPistons! 11-23-08 12:45 AM

Last time i checked rhys hasn't been anywhere near a car in some time. I forget the details but i remember hearing about him being in critical condition a few months back..... Dunno what's up now though.

francogt1 11-23-08 12:58 AM

that fc is fast! it would be awesome to see some pics of the Drivetrain.

re10 11-23-08 01:41 AM

Rys (as a young fella) was sitting in the passenger seat I think - have the video somewhere???

That particular car is apparently sitting in New Zealand somewhere in storage. It's sister car (triple rotor-turbo, Pikes Peak class winner) is also in New Zealand currently for sale. With the exchange rate the way it is, would be a cheap deal!!!

Opps, silly accents.

stevensimon 11-24-08 02:35 PM

rhys millen is still out driving. i was just in long beach for the world drifting championship and i think he won there. was def driving there though. hes also going to try his backflip again this year

ZumSpeedRX-7 11-24-08 04:35 PM

there's nothing like rotaries mixed with rallying! there's a RX-3 that does a good deal of events out in the northeast. can't remember the name, but can't forget the sound! so cool.

Hyper4mance2k 11-24-08 06:50 PM

that was a great video. The 7's can't lose!

Bruceman 11-25-08 06:57 PM

Don't forget Part 2

Oh man those GTX's in the second part are awesome!

Chedstar 11-25-08 08:52 PM

I watched Rod Millen run a special stage in the mid 80's during the Olympic Peninsula rally, awesome is the only way I can describe it. That was before he developed the 4WD and used to get beat by John Buffum in the Audi Quatro.

ZumSpeedRX-7 11-25-08 11:20 PM

John Buffum's old Audi was at the Maine/New England Forrest Rally this year running as safety car. that thing is no joke!

i wish i couldve seen an event with Buffum and Millen going head to head. must have been great to witness.

Cavi Mike 11-25-08 11:32 PM

That's Rod Millen. Rhys was probably still in a stroller when this video was taken.

Shainiac 11-25-08 11:45 PM

Yeah I realized that after I posted the video. If a Mod feels like changing it, feel free. The thick Aussie (or maybe NZ?) accent had me confuzed when they said Rod. Still a cool video!

Chedstar 11-26-08 10:02 AM

I was a pretty young kid, my dad was an SCCA club racer and I use to read Sportscar Magazine from cover to cover, there was always articles about Millen and Buffum going at it in different rallies.

I remember both Rod and John sitting in their cars on pregrid, and I did not have the nerve to go ask for their autographs. Damn it!!

zinx 11-26-08 10:05 AM

Thanks for posting that, great vid.

haha, i know exactly what you mean. i was 21 when i did his (JB's) overnight winter TSD rally for the first time in Vermont. i approached him, not for his autograph, but for help on an instruction and i felt a little starstruck. "can you autograa... i mean, help me with NRI # 22?" once i got past his history in the motorsport, i saw him as a guy who loves racing and rallying as much as i do. its still always a stomach stirring feeling. i just have to remember that they are just like me, with better skill, and possibly better luck to get where they are; but die hard motorists, nonetheless.

i wish i couldve seen rally racing back then. i hear all the stories at events and it makes me a little sad to be a first generation racer.

sweet video. thanks for sharing.

Valkyrie 11-26-08 12:26 PM

It's hilarious how an Audi AWD turbo got smoked by a hopped-up FC.

thats awesome.

RLaoFD 12-01-08 11:14 PM

What a beautiful-sounding car. Its like music that makes you cry. brapping...

Juiceh 12-01-08 11:59 PM

Looks more like the drivetrain of his 4wd 1st gen. The rear end is not a 2nd gen rear and the engine looks like a 12a. Threads about this car pop up periodically and someone always asks about the drivetrain and this pic is always reposted.

Anyone else notice that in 1988 it looks like Rod had S5 tails on his car already?

I really wish there were detailed pics of the 2nd gen 4wd system.

junito1 12-02-08 12:21 AM

I was gonna say... I wasnt feeling the straight axle for the fc. 1st gen i can understand since it came straight axle.

diabolical1 12-02-08 12:48 AM

finally fixed the sound on my computer and was able to enjoy the footage. sounded so sexy!!!

93rx74lyfe 12-02-08 11:26 AM

Pure sex!:drool1:

Whizbang 12-03-08 01:40 PM

it is possible that for all the work the went through for the front suspension, they have opted to run a solid axle rear since the FB axles has a variety of final drive ratios in comparison to the FC.

junito1 12-04-08 12:32 PM

Its a race car.. i doubt they use factory axles? OR LSd's
