rev limiter???
 

when i built my 12 bridgeport my builder said buy a msd 6a digital...so i did an it runs primary using pickup from dist an secondary is using 2nd dist pickup running as stock setup.i also have a duel outlet coil for the msd......anyway what is my cheapest route an how to set up a rev limiter? no drag racing only s.c.c.a. reginal (local) trac racing.all im wanting is a cheep way of not over reving if i miss a gear or break a axel or something....thinking of maby a tac with built in rev limiter or is there some sort of addon thats better or cheaper maby? would like to switch the 6a dig over to the secondary an put a new 6al with rev limiter on 1st...but my builder dislikes that setup.the set up im running works great an havent fouled any plugs or any issues,starts great,runs great..ectfor some reason he doesnt like the way a msd with built in re limiter works...something roatry related maby?

You will kill an engine faster with a rev limiter than with a momentary overrev.

That was a lesson I learned the hard way.

so are you saying dont run a rev limiter? but i thought so many on here do.....

What kills is suttering against the limiter, especially under load. The stationary and rotor gears really do not like that, and you can also flap the apex seals apart. I run a 2-step sometimes but there is no high speed limiter, and I don't use it for launching, only shifting, so it only ever shuts the engine off entirely, no stutter.

Many aftermarket ECUs have a "soft cut" rev limit option. It linearly retards the timing before it gets to the hard limiter.
This allows the engine to become sluggish and give you a heads up that it's time to shift.
I have yet to hear a hard limiter rev cut from my car with the soft limiter on, even with lots of wheelspin in first.

To my knowledge, none of the RX7 racecars in KC have or use rev limiters. I have never had one on my car. My ignition is a wasted spark MSD 6A on the leading side and OE ignition on the trailing side. I use shielded wire to and from the MSD (it is on my dash board) to eliminate electrical interference with the OE ignition.

Instead of a rev limiter, I recommend a shift light. If you get a programmable switch or light you can set the light to come on a few hundred RPMs before you want to change gears. Summit Racing has several options for less than $50 that work well.

In club racing I use the shift light as a way to gauge my performance on track. The earlier I can get it to come on at the end of a straight the better I am doing. Sort of like an on board driving coach.

this is an engine failure from a rev limiter, FC3S Pro v2.0:&nbsp K2RD HOF

engine would sit on the 8250rpm limiter for 15 seconds or so between the flag stand and turn 1, and aside from loosing a bunch of time, the engine eventually gave up
