Relocation of battery in FC
Hey guys along with my Haltech, i'm relocating the battery to the rear bin. Does anyone know what type of enclosure is needed for Auto-X and Drag racing. I would like something; not just ruke book safe, but something for the passenger and myself as well. Would i need battery shut-offs and would it be a good idea to use a SS battery tray? C'mon throw me a freaking bone here

summit racing has a "kit" for that, not sure if the tray they provide is enclosed or not.

You need a sealed box vented outside the car and properly ancored. You should also look into a sealed battery.

I believe a relocated battery also requires a cutoff switch in NHRA.. I could be wrong, but I think I'm right :)

I run an Optima Blue Cell (their marine grade) well run is a little ambitious, it's sitting in my bathroom lol I'm going to mount it free air with a single billet clamp just behind where the passenger seat was. Check the rules of any governing body that your car may compete in before you buy, fabricate, etc.

i run a sealed Optima red top. At least they sey it's sealed. But i guess it should vent to the outside. I just don't a cut off visible to the outside of my car. Atracts way TOO much attention.

the pre made boxes (summit etc) are too big to fit in the rear bin. I'm getting a custom 1/8" thick alum box built just a bit bigger then my red top by a local place so it'll fit in the bin. it'll be more or less sealed and vented. but probably cost 2x the pre made ones :( should have it mid next week or so. then the mounting begines.
I'm not putting a kill switch in though so I can't drag race at our local drag track. I really don't think the charging system will like a kill switch on a street car. the power would have to come out of the alternator. 20' back to the switch, then 20' back up to the fuse box to run the car. that'll add a nice load to the alternator. |
I plan on putting the kill switch in a resced box behind the license plate. Take the plate off at the track and all is legal. From the inside of the car, and outside though, it looks stock on the street. ;)

ya I thought of that. easy to do. but then your car'scharging system is running through 40' of wire. were as if you just move the battery to the back, the car is still running off 2' of wire (alternator to fuse box). and starting off 15'.

Why the hell do i need a battery cut off. That's insane! stock it didn't have one.

ya only for drag on NHRA tracks. if yours isn't then you probably don't need it. and you don't need it for auto x or road racing I don't think.

here's my box with the tie downs :D
still gota drill holes in the lid (held down with nuts on the battery tie down) make holes for wires and air vent tube, and mount it into the car. I'm sorry to post this here as I don't race yet, but I plan to relocate my battery (in a box) to the passenger muffler location. I have a single exhaust and I can't think of a way to get that weight lower or better positioned to offset the exhaust weight.
Anyone see any problems w/ this? (#14 to 4/0 motor lead EPDM wire is "free" to me so length of runs shouldn't be a problem.) Also, thinking of putting a current cut-off switch in a CF surround at the stock passenger muffler tip "hole". But is there any max/min height the switch must be at? It would be pretty easy to reach if my car was upside down... :( |

Its there in case YOU crash, it allows the course workers to kill all electrical power to the car. Keeps you from pumping fuel into a fire etc...
Its plain common sense. Also its part of the insuarnace stipulations for most track events. If you don't like the rules, don't play. Its their football field and noones feelings are going to get hurt if you choose not to play by not following THEIR rules. Sorry for sounding Harsh and like an asshole, but the rules are their for a reason. I choose not to play with the Sports Car Communists of America due to their classing, but their SAFETY RULES are excellant and most are written in some poor SOB's blood. |
Have any of you guys thought of using relays. That would alow you to have a switch in the console and the exterior w/o alot more heavy wire. Will they not alow this. Do you have to have a switch outside of the car?
